Tokio Marine Holdings (TSE:8766) Has Announced That It Will Be Increasing Its Dividend To ¥105.00
The board of Tokio Marine Holdings, Inc. (TSE:8766) has announced that it will be paying its dividend of ¥105.00 on the 10th of December, an increased payment from last year's comparable dividend. The payment will take the dividend yield to 3.4%, which is in line with the average for the industry.
Tokio Marine Holdings' Payment Could Potentially Have Solid Earnings Coverage
While it is always good to see a solid dividend yield, we should also consider whether the payment is feasible. Before making this announcement, Tokio Marine Holdings was easily earning enough to cover the dividend. As a result, a large proportion of what it earned was being reinvested back into the business.
Looking forward, earnings per share is forecast to fall by 6.5% over the next year. If the dividend continues along recent trends, we estimate the payout ratio could be 35%, which we consider to be quite comfortable, with most of the company's earnings left over to grow the business in the future.

Tokio Marine Holdings Has A Solid Track Record
Even over a long history of paying dividends, the company's distributions have been remarkably stable. Since 2015, the dividend has gone from ¥26.67 total annually to ¥210.00. This works out to be a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of approximately 23% a year over that time. So, dividends have been growing pretty quickly, and even more impressively, they haven't experienced any notable falls during this period.
The Dividend Looks Likely To Grow
Some investors will be chomping at the bit to buy some of the company's stock based on its dividend history. Tokio Marine Holdings has impressed us by growing EPS at 43% per year over the past five years. Earnings per share is growing at a solid clip, and the payout ratio is low which we think is an ideal combination in a dividend stock as the company can quite easily raise the dividend in the future.
Tokio Marine Holdings Looks Like A Great Dividend Stock
Overall, we think this could be an attractive income stock, and it is only getting better by paying a higher dividend this year. The company is generating plenty of cash, and the earnings also quite easily cover the distributions. We should point out that the earnings are expected to fall over the next 12 months, which won't be a problem if this doesn't become a trend, but could cause some turbulence in the next year. All of these factors considered, we think this has solid potential as a dividend stock.
Market movements attest to how highly valued a consistent dividend policy is compared to one which is more unpredictable.
