Meito (TSE:2207) Has Announced That It Will Be Increasing Its Dividend To ¥25.00
The board of Meito Co., Ltd. (TSE:2207) has announced that it will be paying its dividend of ¥25.00 on the 29th of June, an increased payment from last year's comparable dividend. This makes the dividend yield about the same as the industry average at 1.9%.
Meito's Future Dividend Projections Appear Well Covered By Earnings
Unless the payments are sustainable, the dividend yield doesn't mean too much. Prior to this announcement, Meito's earnings easily covered the dividend, but free cash flows were negative. In general, we consider cash flow to be more important than earnings, so we would be cautious about relying on the sustainability of this dividend.
Over the next year, EPS could expand by 25.4% if recent trends continue. Assuming the dividend continues along recent trends, we think the payout ratio could be 18% by next year, which is in a pretty sustainable range.

Dividend Volatility
The company's dividend history has been marked by instability, with at least one cut in the last 10 years. The annual payment during the last 10 years was ¥20.00 in 2015, and the most recent fiscal year payment was ¥45.00. This implies that the company grew its distributions at a yearly rate of about 8.4% over that duration. It's good to see the dividend growing at a decent rate, but the dividend has been cut at least once in the past. Meito might have put its house in order since then, but we remain cautious.
The Dividend Looks Likely To Grow
With a relatively unstable dividend, it's even more important to see if earnings per share is growing. Meito has seen EPS rising for the last five years, at 25% per annum. Earnings per share is growing at a solid clip, and the payout ratio is low which we think is an ideal combination in a dividend stock as the company can quite easily raise the dividend in the future.
Our Thoughts On Meito's Dividend
Overall, we always like to see the dividend being raised, but we don't think Meito will make a great income stock. While the low payout ratio is a redeeming feature, this is offset by the minimal cash to cover the payments. We would probably look elsewhere for an income investment.
It's important to note that companies having a consistent dividend policy will generate greater investor confidence than those having an erratic one. Still, investors need to consider a host of other factors, apart from dividend payments, when analysing a company.
