The Market Doesn't Like What It Sees From Ichiyoshi Securities Co., Ltd.'s (TSE:8624) Earnings Yet As Shares Tumble 28%
The Ichiyoshi Securities Co., Ltd. (TSE:8624) share price has fared very poorly over the last month, falling by a substantial 28%. Longer-term shareholders would now have taken a real hit with the stock declining 7.7% in the last year.
Following the heavy fall in price, Ichiyoshi Securities may be sending bullish signals at the moment with its price-to-earnings (or "P/E") ratio of 10.1x, since almost half of all companies in Japan have P/E ratios greater than 14x and even P/E's higher than 21x are not unusual. However, the P/E might be low for a reason and it requires further investigation to determine if it's justified.
With earnings growth that's exceedingly strong of late, Ichiyoshi Securities has been doing very well. One possibility is that the P/E is low because investors think this strong earnings growth might actually underperform the broader market in the near future. If that doesn't eventuate, then existing shareholders have reason to be quite optimistic about the future direction of the share price.

There's an inherent assumption that a company should underperform the market for P/E ratios like Ichiyoshi Securities' to be considered reasonable.
If we review the last year of earnings growth, the company posted a terrific increase of 112%. However, the latest three year period hasn't been as great in aggregate as it didn't manage to provide any growth at all. So it appears to us that the company has had a mixed result in terms of growing earnings over that time.
In contrast to the company, the rest of the market is expected to grow by 9.8% over the next year, which really puts the company's recent medium-term earnings decline into perspective.
With this information, we are not surprised that Ichiyoshi Securities is trading at a P/E lower than the market. Nonetheless, there's no guarantee the P/E has reached a floor yet with earnings going in reverse. Even just maintaining these prices could be difficult to achieve as recent earnings trends are already weighing down the shares.
The Final Word
Ichiyoshi Securities' recently weak share price has pulled its P/E below most other companies. We'd say the price-to-earnings ratio's power isn't primarily as a valuation instrument but rather to gauge current investor sentiment and future expectations.
We've established that Ichiyoshi Securities maintains its low P/E on the weakness of its sliding earnings over the medium-term, as expected. At this stage investors feel the potential for an improvement in earnings isn't great enough to justify a higher P/E ratio. Unless the recent medium-term conditions improve, they will continue to form a barrier for the share price around these levels.
