The board of Orient Corporation (TSE:8585) has announced that it will pay a dividend of ¥40.00 per share on the 26th of June. This means the annual payment is 4.7% of the current stock price, which is above the average for the industry.

Estimates Indicate Orient's Could Struggle to Maintain Dividend Payments In The Future
Impressive dividend yields are good, but this doesn't matter much if the payments can't be sustained. Prior to this announcement, the company was paying out 111% of what it was earning, however the dividend was quite comfortably covered by free cash flows at a cash payout ratio of only 10%. Given that the dividend is a cash outflow, we think that cash is more important than accounting measures of profit when assessing the dividend, so this is a mitigating factor.
The next 12 months is set to see EPS grow by 21.4%. If the dividend continues on its recent course, the payout ratio in 12 months could be 102%, which is a bit high and could start applying pressure to the balance sheet.
Orient Is Still Building Its Track Record
It is great to see that Orient has been paying a stable dividend for a number of years now, however we want to be a bit cautious about whether this will remain true through a full economic cycle. Since 2017, the annual payment back then was ¥20.00, compared to the most recent full-year payment of ¥40.00. This means that it has been growing its distributions at 9.1% per annum over that time. The dividend has been growing as a reasonable rate, which we like. However, investors will probably want to see a longer track record before they consider Orient to be a consistent dividend paying stock.
The Dividend Has Limited Growth Potential
Some investors will be chomping at the bit to buy some of the company's stock based on its dividend history. However, initial appearances might be deceiving. Over the past five years, it looks as though Orient's EPS has declined at around 22% a year. This steep decline can indicate that the business is going through a tough time, which could constrain its ability to pay a larger dividend each year in the future. On the bright side, earnings are predicted to gain some ground over the next year, but until this turns into a pattern we wouldn't be feeling too comfortable.
Orient's Dividend Doesn't Look Sustainable
Overall, it's nice to see a consistent dividend payment, but we think that longer term, the current level of payment might be unsustainable. In the past, the payments have been unstable, but over the short term the dividend could be reliable, with the company generating enough cash to cover it. We would be a touch cautious of relying on this stock primarily for the dividend income.
It's important to note that companies having a consistent dividend policy will generate greater investor confidence than those having an erratic one.
