J Trust (TSE:8508) Will Pay A Larger Dividend Than Last Year At ¥17.00
J Trust Co., Ltd.'s (TSE:8508) dividend will be increasing from last year's payment of the same period to ¥17.00 on 26th of March. The payment will take the dividend yield to 3.7%, which is in line with the average for the industry.
J Trust's Future Dividend Projections Appear Well Covered By Earnings
Unless the payments are sustainable, the dividend yield doesn't mean too much. However, prior to this announcement, J Trust's dividend was comfortably covered by both cash flow and earnings. As a result, a large proportion of what it earned was being reinvested back into the business.
Looking forward, earnings per share is forecast to rise by 18.7% over the next year. If the dividend continues along recent trends, we estimate the payout ratio will be 37%, which is in the range that makes us comfortable with the sustainability of the dividend.

Dividend Volatility
While the company has been paying a dividend for a long time, it has cut the dividend at least once in the last 10 years. Since 2015, the annual payment back then was ¥10.00, compared to the most recent full-year payment of ¥16.00. This implies that the company grew its distributions at a yearly rate of about 4.8% over that duration. Modest growth in the dividend is good to see, but we think this is offset by historical cuts to the payments. It is hard to live on a dividend income if the company's earnings are not consistent.
The Dividend Looks Likely To Grow
Growing earnings per share could be a mitigating factor when considering the past fluctuations in the dividend. J Trust has seen EPS rising for the last five years, at 26% per annum. Rapid earnings growth and a low payout ratio suggest this company has been effectively reinvesting in its business. Should that continue, this company could have a bright future.
J Trust Looks Like A Great Dividend Stock
In summary, it is always positive to see the dividend being increased, and we are particularly pleased with its overall sustainability. Earnings are easily covering distributions, and the company is generating plenty of cash. All in all, this checks a lot of the boxes we look for when choosing an income stock.
It's important to note that companies having a consistent dividend policy will generate greater investor confidence than those having an erratic one.
