Positive Sentiment Still Eludes Nishimoto Co., Ltd. (TSE:9260) Following 26% Share Price Slump
Unfortunately for some shareholders, the Nishimoto Co., Ltd. (TSE:9260) share price has dived 26% in the last thirty days, prolonging recent pain. The drop over the last 30 days has capped off a tough year for shareholders, with the share price down 30% in that time.
Although its price has dipped substantially, given about half the companies in Japan have price-to-earnings ratios (or "P/E's") above 14x, you may still consider Nishimoto as an attractive investment with its 9.4x P/E ratio. Nonetheless, we'd need to dig a little deeper to determine if there is a rational basis for the reduced P/E.
As an illustration, earnings have deteriorated at Nishimoto over the last year, which is not ideal at all. It might be that many expect the disappointing earnings performance to continue or accelerate, which has repressed the P/E. If you like the company, you'd be hoping this isn't the case so that you could potentially pick up some stock while it's out of favour.

There's an inherent assumption that a company should underperform the market for P/E ratios like Nishimoto's to be considered reasonable.
Taking a look back first, the company's earnings per share growth last year wasn't something to get excited about as it posted a disappointing decline of 30%. However, a few very strong years before that means that it was still able to grow EPS by an impressive 173% in total over the last three years. Accordingly, while they would have preferred to keep the run going, shareholders would probably welcome the medium-term rates of earnings growth.
This is in contrast to the rest of the market, which is expected to grow by 9.8% over the next year, materially lower than the company's recent medium-term annualised growth rates.
In light of this, it's peculiar that Nishimoto's P/E sits below the majority of other companies. Apparently some shareholders believe the recent performance has exceeded its limits and have been accepting significantly lower selling prices.
The Final Word
The softening of Nishimoto's shares means its P/E is now sitting at a pretty low level. It's argued the price-to-earnings ratio is an inferior measure of value within certain industries, but it can be a powerful business sentiment indicator.
We've established that Nishimoto currently trades on a much lower than expected P/E since its recent three-year growth is higher than the wider market forecast. There could be some major unobserved threats to earnings preventing the P/E ratio from matching this positive performance. It appears many are indeed anticipating earnings instability, because the persistence of these recent medium-term conditions would normally provide a boost to the share price.
