Sharp Corporation's (TSE:6753) Share Price Not Quite Adding Up

It's not a stretch to say that Sharp Corporation's (TSE:6753) price-to-sales (or "P/S") ratio of 0.3x right now seems quite "middle-of-the-road" for companies in the Consumer Durables industry in Japan, where the median P/S ratio is around 0.5x. While this might not raise any eyebrows, if the P/S ratio is not justified investors could be missing out on a potential opportunity or ignoring looming disappointment.

What Does Sharp's Recent Performance Look Like?

While the industry has experienced revenue growth lately, Sharp's revenue has gone into reverse gear, which is not great. It might be that many expect the dour revenue performance to strengthen positively, which has kept the P/S from falling. However, if this isn't the case, investors might get caught out paying too much for the stock.

Is There Some Revenue Growth Forecasted For Sharp?

Sharp's P/S ratio would be typical for a company that's only expected to deliver moderate growth, and importantly, perform in line with the industry.

Taking a look back first, the company's revenue growth last year wasn't something to get excited about as it posted a disappointing decline of 7.7%. As a result, revenue from three years ago have also fallen 9.6% overall. Accordingly, shareholders would have felt downbeat about the medium-term rates of revenue growth.

Turning to the outlook, the next three years should bring diminished returns, with revenue decreasing 3.2% per year as estimated by the seven analysts watching the company. With the industry predicted to deliver 1.0% growth per annum, that's a disappointing outcome.

With this in consideration, we think it doesn't make sense that Sharp's P/S is closely matching its industry peers. It seems most investors are hoping for a turnaround in the company's business prospects, but the analyst cohort is not so confident this will happen. Only the boldest would assume these prices are sustainable as these declining revenues are likely to weigh on the share price eventually.

The Bottom Line On Sharp's P/S

Typically, we'd caution against reading too much into price-to-sales ratios when settling on investment decisions, though it can reveal plenty about what other market participants think about the company.

While Sharp's P/S isn't anything out of the ordinary for companies in the industry, we didn't expect it given forecasts of revenue decline.
