Investors Shouldn't Be Too Comfortable With Zoom's (TYO:6694) Robust Earnings
Zoom Corporation (TYO:6694) just reported some strong earnings, and the market rewarded them with a positive share price move. However, we think that shareholders may be missing some concerning details in the numbers.

The Impact Of Unusual Items On Profit
Importantly, our data indicates that Zoom's profit received a boost of JP¥178m in unusual items, over the last year. While it's always nice to have higher profit, a large contribution from unusual items sometimes dampens our enthusiasm. When we analysed the vast majority of listed companies worldwide, we found that significant unusual items are often not repeated. Which is hardly surprising, given the name. Assuming those unusual items don't show up again in the current year, we'd thus expect profit to be weaker next year (in the absence of business growth, that is).

Our Take On Zoom's Profit Performance
We'd posit that Zoom's statutory earnings aren't a clean read on ongoing productivity, due to the large unusual item. Therefore, it seems possible to us that Zoom's true underlying earnings power is actually less than its statutory profit. The silver lining is that its EPS growth over the last year has been really wonderful, even if it's not a perfect measure. At the end of the day, it's essential to consider more than just the factors above, if you want to understand the company properly. In light of this, if you'd like to do more analysis on the company, it's vital to be informed of the risks involved. For example, Zoom has 6 warning signs (and 1 which doesn't sit too well with us) we think you should know about.
This note has only looked at a single factor that sheds light on the nature of Zoom's profit. But there are plenty of other ways to inform your opinion of a company. For example, many people consider a high return on equity as an indication of favorable business economics, while others like to 'follow the money' and search out stocks that insiders are buying. So you may wish to see this free collection of companies boasting high return on equity, or this list of stocks that insiders are buying.
