It's not a stretch to say that LuckLand Co., Ltd.'s (TSE:9612) price-to-sales (or "P/S") ratio of 0.5x right now seems quite "middle-of-the-road" for companies in the Professional Services industry in Japan, where the median P/S ratio is around 0.9x. Although, it's not wise to simply ignore the P/S without explanation as investors may be disregarding a distinct opportunity or a costly mistake.

How Has LuckLand Performed Recently?

For example, consider that LuckLand's financial performance has been pretty ordinary lately as revenue growth is non-existent. One possibility is that the P/S is moderate because investors think this benign revenue growth rate might not be enough to outperform the broader industry in the near future. Those who are bullish on LuckLand will be hoping that this isn't the case, so that they can pick up the stock at a lower valuation.

Is There Some Revenue Growth Forecasted For LuckLand?

LuckLand's P/S ratio would be typical for a company that's only expected to deliver moderate growth, and importantly, perform in line with the industry.

Taking a look back first, we see that there was hardly any revenue growth to speak of for the company over the past year. Regardless, revenue has managed to lift by a handy 23% in aggregate from three years ago, thanks to the earlier period of growth. Accordingly, shareholders probably wouldn't have been overly satisfied with the unstable medium-term growth rates.

It's interesting to note that the rest of the industry is similarly expected to grow by 5.6% over the next year, which is fairly even with the company's recent medium-term annualised growth rates.

In light of this, it's understandable that LuckLand's P/S sits in line with the majority of other companies. It seems most investors are expecting to see average growth rates continue into the future and are only willing to pay a moderate amount for the stock.

What We Can Learn From LuckLand's P/S?

It's argued the price-to-sales ratio is an inferior measure of value within certain industries, but it can be a powerful business sentiment indicator.

As we've seen, LuckLand's three-year revenue trends seem to be contributing to its P/S, given they look similar to current industry expectations. Right now shareholders are comfortable with the P/S as they are quite confident future revenue won't throw up any surprises. If recent medium-term revenue trends continue, it's hard to see the share price moving strongly in either direction in the near future under these circumstances.

Having said that, be aware LuckLand is showing 1 warning sign in our investment analysis, you should know about.
