Pilot (TSE:7846) Is Due To Pay A Dividend Of ¥60.00

The board of Pilot Corporation (TSE:7846) has announced that it will pay a dividend of ¥60.00 per share on the 31st of March. The dividend yield of 2.6% is still a nice boost to shareholder returns, despite the cut.

Pilot's Future Dividend Projections Appear Well Covered By Earnings

If the payments aren't sustainable, a high yield for a few years won't matter that much. Before making this announcement, Pilot was easily earning enough to cover the dividend. This means that most of what the business earns is being used to help it grow.

Looking forward, earnings per share is forecast to rise by 11.6% over the next year. If the dividend continues on this path, the payout ratio could be 36% by next year, which we think can be pretty sustainable going forward.

Pilot Has A Solid Track Record

Even over a long history of paying dividends, the company's distributions have been remarkably stable. Since 2015, the dividend has gone from ¥15.00 total annually to ¥120.00. This works out to be a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of approximately 23% a year over that time. We can see that payments have shown some very nice upward momentum without faltering, which provides some reassurance that future payments will also be reliable.

Pilot May Find It Hard To Grow The Dividend

Investors could be attracted to the stock based on the quality of its payment history. Earnings has been rising at 5.0% per annum over the last five years, which admittedly is a bit slow. While growth may be thin on the ground, Pilot could always pay out a higher proportion of earnings to increase shareholder returns.

We Really Like Pilot's Dividend

In general, we don't like to see the dividend being cut, especially when the company has such high potential like Pilot does. The cut will allow the company to continue paying out the dividend without putting the balance sheet under pressure, which means that it could remain sustainable for longer. Taking this all into consideration, this looks like it could be a good dividend opportunity.

Companies possessing a stable dividend policy will likely enjoy greater investor interest than those suffering from a more inconsistent approach. Still, investors need to consider a host of other factors, apart from dividend payments, when analysing a company.
