Gakujo's (TSE:2301) Dividend Will Be ¥34.00

The board of Gakujo Co., Ltd. (TSE:2301) has announced that it will pay a dividend on the 27th of January, with investors receiving ¥34.00 per share. This means the annual payment is 3.5% of the current stock price, which is above the average for the industry.

Gakujo's Payment Could Potentially Have Solid Earnings Coverage

A big dividend yield for a few years doesn't mean much if it can't be sustained. The last dividend was quite easily covered by Gakujo's earnings. This means that a large portion of its earnings are being retained to grow the business.

Looking forward, earnings per share is forecast to rise by 11.8% over the next year. Assuming the dividend continues along recent trends, we think the payout ratio could be 41% by next year, which is in a pretty sustainable range.

Gakujo Is Still Building Its Track Record

The dividend's track record has been pretty solid, but with only 8 years of history we want to see a few more years of history before making any solid conclusions. The annual payment during the last 8 years was ¥32.00 in 2017, and the most recent fiscal year payment was ¥67.00. This means that it has been growing its distributions at 9.7% per annum over that time. Gakujo has a nice track record of dividend growth but we would wait until we see a longer track record before getting too confident.

The Dividend's Growth Prospects Are Limited

Some investors will be chomping at the bit to buy some of the company's stock based on its dividend history. Earnings has been rising at 3.3% per annum over the last five years, which admittedly is a bit slow. Gakujo is struggling to find viable investments, so it is returning more to shareholders. This isn't bad in itself, but unless earnings growth pick up we wouldn't expect dividends to grow either.

In Summary

Even though the dividend was cut this year, we think Gakujo has the ability to make consistent payments in the future. The payout ratio looks good, but unfortunately the company's dividend track record isn't stellar. The payment isn't stellar, but it could make a decent addition to a dividend portfolio.

It's important to note that companies having a consistent dividend policy will generate greater investor confidence than those having an erratic one. Meanwhile, despite the importance of dividend payments, they are not the only factors our readers should know when assessing a company. Taking the debate a bit further, we've identified 1 warning sign for Gakujo that investors need to be conscious of moving forward. Looking for more high-yielding dividend ideas?
