Here's Why I Think AJIS (TYO:4659) Is An Interesting Stock

Some have more dollars than sense, they say, so even companies that have no revenue, no profit, and a record of falling short, can easily find investors. But as Warren Buffett has mused, 'If you've been playing poker for half an hour and you still don't know who the patsy is, you're the patsy.' When they buy such story stocks, investors are all too often the patsy.

So if you're like me, you might be more interested in profitable, growing companies, like AJIS (TYO:4659). While that doesn't make the shares worth buying at any price, you can't deny that successful capitalism requires profit, eventually. While a well funded company may sustain losses for years, unless its owners have an endless appetite for subsidizing the customer, it will need to generate a profit eventually, or else breathe its last breath.

How Quickly Is AJIS Increasing Earnings Per Share?

As one of my mentors once told me, share price follows earnings per share (EPS). Therefore, there are plenty of investors who like to buy shares in companies that are growing EPS. Impressively, AJIS has grown EPS by 17% per year, compound, in the last three years. As a general rule, we'd say that if a company can keep up that sort of growth, shareholders will be smiling.

I like to take a look at earnings before interest and (EBIT) tax margins, as well as revenue growth, to get another take on the quality of the company's growth. This approach makes AJIS look pretty good, on balance; although revenue is flattish, EBIT margins improved from 13% to 16% in the last year. That's a real positive.

AJIS isn't a huge company, given its market capitalization of JP¥29b. That makes it extra important to check on its balance sheet strength.

Are AJIS Insiders Aligned With All Shareholders?

I like company leaders to have some skin in the game, so to speak, because it increases alignment of incentives between the people running the business, and its true owners. So it is good to see that AJIS insiders have a significant amount of capital invested in the stock. With a whopping JP¥7.1b worth of shares as a group, insiders have plenty riding on the company's success. That holding amounts to 25% of the stock on issue, thus making insiders influential, and aligned, owners of the business.

Should You Add AJIS To Your Watchlist?

Given my belief that share price follows earnings per share you can easily imagine how I feel about AJIS's strong EPS growth. I think that EPS growth is something to boast of, and it doesn't surprise me that insiders are holding on to a considerable chunk of shares. So this is very likely the kind of business that I like to spend time researching, with a view to discerning its true value. While we've looked at the quality of the earnings, we haven't yet done any work to value the stock. So if you like to buy cheap, you may want to check if AJIS is trading on a high P/E or a low P/E, relative to its industry.
