Investors Still Aren't Entirely Convinced By Chori Co., Ltd.'s (TSE:8014) Earnings Despite 27% Price Jump
Chori Co., Ltd. (TSE:8014) shares have had a really impressive month, gaining 27% after a shaky period beforehand. But the gains over the last month weren't enough to make shareholders whole, as the share price is still down 4.5% in the last twelve months.
Even after such a large jump in price, Chori may still be sending bullish signals at the moment with its price-to-earnings (or "P/E") ratio of 7.2x, since almost half of all companies in Japan have P/E ratios greater than 13x and even P/E's higher than 21x are not unusual. Nonetheless, we'd need to dig a little deeper to determine if there is a rational basis for the reduced P/E.
Our free stock report includes 1 warning sign investors should be aware of before investing in Chori. Read for free now.The earnings growth achieved at Chori over the last year would be more than acceptable for most companies. It might be that many expect the respectable earnings performance to degrade substantially, which has repressed the P/E. If that doesn't eventuate, then existing shareholders have reason to be optimistic about the future direction of the share price.

How Is Chori's Growth Trending?
Chori's P/E ratio would be typical for a company that's only expected to deliver limited growth, and importantly, perform worse than the market.
If we review the last year of earnings growth, the company posted a terrific increase of 21%. The strong recent performance means it was also able to grow EPS by 71% in total over the last three years. Accordingly, shareholders would have probably welcomed those medium-term rates of earnings growth.
This is in contrast to the rest of the market, which is expected to grow by 9.7% over the next year, materially lower than the company's recent medium-term annualised growth rates.
In light of this, it's peculiar that Chori's P/E sits below the majority of other companies. Apparently some shareholders believe the recent performance has exceeded its limits and have been accepting significantly lower selling prices.
The Final Word
Despite Chori's shares building up a head of steam, its P/E still lags most other companies. Generally, our preference is to limit the use of the price-to-earnings ratio to establishing what the market thinks about the overall health of a company.
Our examination of Chori revealed its three-year earnings trends aren't contributing to its P/E anywhere near as much as we would have predicted, given they look better than current market expectations. There could be some major unobserved threats to earnings preventing the P/E ratio from matching this positive performance. It appears many are indeed anticipating earnings instability, because the persistence of these recent medium-term conditions would normally provide a boost to the share price.
