ITOCHU's (TSE:8001) investors will be pleased with their solid 272% return over the last five years
The worst result, after buying shares in a company (assuming no leverage), would be if you lose all the money you put in. But on the bright side, you can make far more than 100% on a really good stock. Long term ITOCHU Corporation (TSE:8001) shareholders would be well aware of this, since the stock is up 222% in five years. Also pleasing for shareholders was the 10% gain in the last three months. But this move may well have been assisted by the reasonably buoyant market (up 9.0% in 90 days).
So let's investigate and see if the longer term performance of the company has been in line with the underlying business' progress.
There is no denying that markets are sometimes efficient, but prices do not always reflect underlying business performance. By comparing earnings per share (EPS) and share price changes over time, we can get a feel for how investor attitudes to a company have morphed over time.
Over half a decade, ITOCHU managed to grow its earnings per share at 17% a year. This EPS growth is slower than the share price growth of 26% per year, over the same period. So it's fair to assume the market has a higher opinion of the business than it did five years ago. That's not necessarily surprising considering the five-year track record of earnings growth.

What About Dividends?
As well as measuring the share price return, investors should also consider the total shareholder return (TSR). The TSR incorporates the value of any spin-offs or discounted capital raisings, along with any dividends, based on the assumption that the dividends are reinvested. It's fair to say that the TSR gives a more complete picture for stocks that pay a dividend. In the case of ITOCHU, it has a TSR of 272% for the last 5 years. That exceeds its share price return that we previously mentioned. And there's no prize for guessing that the dividend payments largely explain the divergence!
A Different Perspective
ITOCHU shareholders have received returns of 29% over twelve months (even including dividends), which isn't far from the general market return. We should note here that the five-year TSR is more impressive, at 30% per year. More recently, the share price growth has slowed. But it has to be said the overall picture is one of good long term and short term performance. Arguably that makes ITOCHU a stock worth watching. While it is well worth considering the different impacts that market conditions can have on the share price, there are other factors that are even more important.
