The 5.2% return this week takes NTN's (TSE:6472) shareholders five-year gains to 68%
When you buy and hold a stock for the long term, you definitely want it to provide a positive return. But more than that, you probably want to see it rise more than the market average. Unfortunately for shareholders, while the NTN Corporation (TSE:6472) share price is up 53% in the last five years, that's less than the market return. Some buyers are laughing, though, with an increase of 30% in the last year.
Since the stock has added JP¥8.8b to its market cap in the past week alone, let's see if underlying performance has been driving long-term returns.
To paraphrase Benjamin Graham: Over the short term the market is a voting machine, but over the long term it's a weighing machine. One flawed but reasonable way to assess how sentiment around a company has changed is to compare the earnings per share (EPS) with the share price.
We know that NTN has been profitable in the past. On the other hand, it reported a trailing twelve months loss, suggesting it isn't reliably profitable. So we might find other metrics can better explain the share price movements.
In contrast revenue growth of 9.4% per year is probably viewed as evidence that NTN is growing, a real positive. In that case, the company may be sacrificing current earnings per share to drive growth.

What About Dividends?
As well as measuring the share price return, investors should also consider the total shareholder return (TSR). The TSR is a return calculation that accounts for the value of cash dividends (assuming that any dividend received was reinvested) and the calculated value of any discounted capital raisings and spin-offs. It's fair to say that the TSR gives a more complete picture for stocks that pay a dividend. As it happens, NTN's TSR for the last 5 years was 68%, which exceeds the share price return mentioned earlier. The dividends paid by the company have thusly boosted the total shareholder return.
A Different Perspective
It's good to see that NTN has rewarded shareholders with a total shareholder return of 36% in the last twelve months. That's including the dividend. That's better than the annualised return of 11% over half a decade, implying that the company is doing better recently. Given the share price momentum remains strong, it might be worth taking a closer look at the stock, lest you miss an opportunity. It's always interesting to track share price performance over the longer term. But to understand NTN better, we need to consider many other factors. Case in point: We've spotted 3 warning signs for NTN you should be aware of, and 1 of them is significant.
