Daifuku's (TSE:6383) Shareholders Will Receive A Bigger Dividend Than Last Year
Daifuku Co., Ltd. (TSE:6383) will increase its dividend from last year's comparable payment on the 31st of March to ¥42.00. This takes the annual payment to 1.7% of the current stock price, which is about average for the industry.
Daifuku's Projected Earnings Seem Likely To Cover Future Distributions
We like to see a healthy dividend yield, but that is only helpful to us if the payment can continue. However, prior to this announcement, Daifuku's dividend was comfortably covered by both cash flow and earnings. This means that most of what the business earns is being used to help it grow.
Looking forward, earnings per share is forecast to rise by 5.6% over the next year. If the dividend continues on this path, the payout ratio could be 42% by next year, which we think can be pretty sustainable going forward.

Dividend Volatility
Although the company has a long dividend history, it has been cut at least once in the last 10 years. Since 2015, the dividend has gone from ¥6.67 total annually to ¥84.00. This means that it has been growing its distributions at 29% per annum over that time. Daifuku has grown distributions at a rapid rate despite cutting the dividend at least once in the past. Companies that cut once often cut again, so we would be cautious about buying this stock solely for the dividend income.
The Dividend Looks Likely To Grow
Given that the dividend has been cut in the past, we need to check if earnings are growing and if that might lead to stronger dividends in the future. We are encouraged to see that Daifuku has grown earnings per share at 21% per year over the past five years. Earnings per share is growing at a solid clip, and the payout ratio is low which we think is an ideal combination in a dividend stock as the company can quite easily raise the dividend in the future.
Daifuku Looks Like A Great Dividend Stock
In summary, it is always positive to see the dividend being increased, and we are particularly pleased with its overall sustainability. Distributions are quite easily covered by earnings, which are also being converted to cash flows. All in all, this checks a lot of the boxes we look for when choosing an income stock.
It's important to note that companies having a consistent dividend policy will generate greater investor confidence than those having an erratic one. However, there are other things to consider for investors when analysing stock performance. Companies that are growing earnings tend to be the best dividend stocks over the long term.
