LIXIL's Distributions May Be Difficult To Sustain
While it is great to have a strong dividend yield, we should also consider whether the payment is sustainable. Even though LIXIL isn't generating a profit, it is generating healthy free cash flows that easily cover the dividend. In general, cash flows are more important than the more traditional measures of profit so we feel pretty comfortable with the dividend at this level.
Analysts are expecting EPS to grow by 53.5% over the next 12 months. We like to see the company moving towards profitability, but this probably won't be enough for it to post positive net income this year. The healthy cash flows are definitely a good sign though, so we wouldn't panic just yet, especially with the earnings growing.
LIXIL Has A Solid Track Record
The company has an extended history of paying stable dividends. The annual payment during the last 10 years was ¥50.00 in 2014, and the most recent fiscal year payment was ¥90.00. This means that it has been growing its distributions at 6.1% per annum over that time. Companies like this can be very valuable over the long term, if the decent rate of growth can be maintained.
Dividend Growth May Be Hard To Achieve
Investors who have held shares in the company for the past few years will be happy with the dividend income they have received. Let's not jump to conclusions as things might not be as good as they appear on the surface. In the last five years, LIXIL's earnings per share has shrunk at approximately 4.2% per annum. Declining earnings will inevitably lead to the company paying a lower dividend in line with lower profits. Earnings are forecast to grow over the next 12 months and if that happens we could still be a little bit cautious until it becomes a pattern.
Our Thoughts On LIXIL's Dividend
Overall, we don't think this company makes a great dividend stock, even though the dividend wasn't cut this year. The company is generating plenty of cash, but we still think the dividend is a bit high for comfort. We would probably look elsewhere for an income investment.
Market movements attest to how highly valued a consistent dividend policy is compared to one which is more unpredictable. At the same time, there are other factors our readers should be conscious of before pouring capital into a stock.
