The board of Hirakawa Hewtech Corp. (TSE:5821) has announced that it will be paying its dividend of ¥22.00 on the 9th of December, an increased payment from last year's comparable dividend. This will take the annual payment to 3.1% of the stock price, which is above what most companies in the industry pay.

Hirakawa Hewtech's Payment Has Solid Earnings Coverage
We like to see robust dividend yields, but that doesn't matter if the payment isn't sustainable. However, Hirakawa Hewtech's earnings easily cover the dividend. As a result, a large proportion of what it earned was being reinvested back into the business.
The next year is set to see EPS grow by 12.9%. If the dividend continues along recent trends, we estimate the payout ratio will be 39%, which is in the range that makes us comfortable with the sustainability of the dividend.
Hirakawa Hewtech Has A Solid Track Record
The company has an extended history of paying stable dividends. Since 2014, the dividend has gone from ¥11.00 total annually to ¥45.00. This implies that the company grew its distributions at a yearly rate of about 15% over that duration. Rapidly growing dividends for a long time is a very valuable feature for an income stock.
Dividend Growth May Be Hard To Come By
Investors who have held shares in the company for the past few years will be happy with the dividend income they have received. Unfortunately things aren't as good as they seem. It's not great to see that Hirakawa Hewtech's earnings per share has fallen at approximately 6.3% per year over the past five years. A modest decline in earnings isn't great, and it makes it quite unlikely that the dividend will grow in the future unless that trend can be reversed. However, the next year is actually looking up, with earnings set to rise. We would just wait until it becomes a pattern before getting too excited.
In Summary
In summary, it's great to see that the company can raise the dividend and keep it in a sustainable range. With shrinking earnings, the company may see some issues maintaining the dividend even though they look pretty sustainable for now. The dividend looks okay, but there have been some issues in the past, so we would be a little bit cautious.
Market movements attest to how highly valued a consistent dividend policy is compared to one which is more unpredictable. Still, investors need to consider a host of other factors, apart from dividend payments, when analysing a company.
