Lacklustre Performance Is Driving Ohmori Co.,Ltd.'s (TSE:1844) 33% Price Drop
Ohmori Co.,Ltd. (TSE:1844) shares have had a horrible month, losing 33% after a relatively good period beforehand. Longer-term shareholders will rue the drop in the share price, since it's now virtually flat for the year after a promising few quarters.
In spite of the heavy fall in price, OhmoriLtd's price-to-earnings (or "P/E") ratio of 10.1x might still make it look like a buy right now compared to the market in Japan, where around half of the companies have P/E ratios above 14x and even P/E's above 21x are quite common. Nonetheless, we'd need to dig a little deeper to determine if there is a rational basis for the reduced P/E.
As an illustration, earnings have deteriorated at OhmoriLtd over the last year, which is not ideal at all. One possibility is that the P/E is low because investors think the company won't do enough to avoid underperforming the broader market in the near future. If you like the company, you'd be hoping this isn't the case so that you could potentially pick up some stock while it's out of favour.

OhmoriLtd's P/E ratio would be typical for a company that's only expected to deliver limited growth, and importantly, perform worse than the market.
If we review the last year of earnings, dishearteningly the company's profits fell to the tune of 21%. At least EPS has managed not to go completely backwards from three years ago in aggregate, thanks to the earlier period of growth. Accordingly, shareholders probably wouldn't have been overly satisfied with the unstable medium-term growth rates.
This is in contrast to the rest of the market, which is expected to grow by 9.8% over the next year, materially higher than the company's recent medium-term annualised growth rates.
In light of this, it's understandable that OhmoriLtd's P/E sits below the majority of other companies. Apparently many shareholders weren't comfortable holding on to something they believe will continue to trail the bourse.
The Final Word
OhmoriLtd's recently weak share price has pulled its P/E below most other companies. It's argued the price-to-earnings ratio is an inferior measure of value within certain industries, but it can be a powerful business sentiment indicator.
We've established that OhmoriLtd maintains its low P/E on the weakness of its recent three-year growth being lower than the wider market forecast, as expected. Right now shareholders are accepting the low P/E as they concede future earnings probably won't provide any pleasant surprises. Unless the recent medium-term conditions improve, they will continue to form a barrier for the share price around these levels.
We don't want to rain on the parade too much, but we did also find 4 warning signs for OhmoriLtd that you need to be mindful of.
