Did You Participate In Any Of Watanabe Sato's (TYO:1807) Respectable 64% Return?
When we invest, we're generally looking for stocks that outperform the market average. And in our experience, buying the right stocks can give your wealth a significant boost. To wit, the Watanabe Sato share price has climbed 42% in five years, easily topping the market return of 15% (ignoring dividends). On the other hand, the more recent gains haven't been so impressive, with shareholders gaining just 9.8% , including dividends .

There is no denying that markets are sometimes efficient, but prices do not always reflect underlying business performance. One flawed but reasonable way to assess how sentiment around a company has changed is to compare the earnings per share (EPS) with the share price.
Over half a decade, Watanabe Sato managed to grow its earnings per share at 5.0% a year. This EPS growth is slower than the share price growth of 7% per year, over the same period. This suggests that market participants hold the company in higher regard, these days. And that's hardly shocking given the track record of growth.
The image below shows how EPS has tracked over time (if you click on the image you can see greater detail).

What About Dividends?
As well as measuring the share price return, investors should also consider the total shareholder return (TSR). The TSR incorporates the value of any spin-offs or discounted capital raisings, along with any dividends, based on the assumption that the dividends are reinvested. It's fair to say that the TSR gives a more complete picture for stocks that pay a dividend. As it happens, Watanabe Sato's TSR for the last 5 years was 64%, which exceeds the share price return mentioned earlier. This is largely a result of its dividend payments!
A Different Perspective
It's nice to see that Watanabe Sato shareholders have received a total shareholder return of 9.8% over the last year. And that does include the dividend. Having said that, the five-year TSR of 10% a year, is even better. It's always interesting to track share price performance over the longer term. But to understand Watanabe Sato better, we need to consider many other factors. For instance, we've identified 2 warning signs for Watanabe Sato (1 can't be ignored) that you should be aware of.
