Examining Cashflow Against Ecosuntek's Earnings

In high finance, the key ratio used to measure how well a company converts reported profits into free cash flow (FCF) is the accrual ratio (from cashflow). To get the accrual ratio we first subtract FCF from profit for a period, and then divide that number by the average operating assets for the period. This ratio tells us how much of a company's profit is not backed by free cashflow.

As a result, a negative accrual ratio is a positive for the company, and a positive accrual ratio is a negative. That is not intended to imply we should worry about a positive accrual ratio, but it's worth noting where the accrual ratio is rather high. To quote a 2014 paper by Lewellen and Resutek, "firms with higher accruals tend to be less profitable in the future".

For the year to June 2022, Ecosuntek had an accrual ratio of -0.31. That indicates that its free cash flow quite significantly exceeded its statutory profit. Indeed, in the last twelve months it reported free cash flow of €10m, well over the €2.90m it reported in profit. Ecosuntek's free cash flow improved over the last year, which is generally good to see.

Our Take On Ecosuntek's Profit Performance

Happily for shareholders, Ecosuntek produced plenty of free cash flow to back up its statutory profit numbers. Because of this, we think Ecosuntek's underlying earnings potential is as good as, or possibly even better, than the statutory profit makes it seem! And on top of that, its earnings per share have grown at an extremely impressive rate over the last three years.
