With A 33% Price Drop For e-Novia S.p.A. (BIT:E9IA) You'll Still Get What You Pay For

The e-Novia S.p.A. (BIT:E9IA) share price has fared very poorly over the last month, falling by a substantial 33%. To make matters worse, the recent drop has wiped out a year's worth of gains with the share price now back where it started a year ago.

In spite of the heavy fall in price, when almost half of the companies in Italy's Tech industry have price-to-sales ratios (or "P/S") below 0.7x, you may still consider e-Novia as a stock not worth researching with its 6.8x P/S ratio. However, the P/S might be quite high for a reason and it requires further investigation to determine if it's justified.

How e-Novia Has Been Performing

The recent revenue growth at e-Novia would have to be considered satisfactory if not spectacular. One possibility is that the P/S ratio is high because investors think this good revenue growth will be enough to outperform the broader industry in the near future. However, if this isn't the case, investors might get caught out paying too much for the stock.

How Is e-Novia's Revenue Growth Trending?

e-Novia's P/S ratio would be typical for a company that's expected to deliver very strong growth, and importantly, perform much better than the industry.

If we review the last year of revenue growth, the company posted a worthy increase of 3.9%. The latest three year period has also seen an excellent 52% overall rise in revenue, aided somewhat by its short-term performance. So we can start by confirming that the company has done a great job of growing revenues over that time.

When compared to the industry's one-year growth forecast of 8.6%, the most recent medium-term revenue trajectory is noticeably more alluring

With this information, we can see why e-Novia is trading at such a high P/S compared to the industry. Presumably shareholders aren't keen to offload something they believe will continue to outmanoeuvre the wider industry.

The Final Word

e-Novia's shares may have suffered, but its P/S remains high. Typically, we'd caution against reading too much into price-to-sales ratios when settling on investment decisions, though it can reveal plenty about what other market participants think about the company.

As we suspected, our examination of e-Novia revealed its three-year revenue trends are contributing to its high P/S, given they look better than current industry expectations. At this stage investors feel the potential continued revenue growth in the future is great enough to warrant an inflated P/S. If recent medium-term revenue trends continue, it's hard to see the share price falling strongly in the near future under these circumstances.
