A Closer Look At Vantea SMART's Earnings

In high finance, the key ratio used to measure how well a company converts reported profits into free cash flow (FCF) is the accrual ratio (from cashflow). In plain english, this ratio subtracts FCF from net profit, and divides that number by the company's average operating assets over that period. This ratio tells us how much of a company's profit is not backed by free cashflow.

Therefore, it's actually considered a good thing when a company has a negative accrual ratio, but a bad thing if its accrual ratio is positive. While having an accrual ratio above zero is of little concern, we do think it's worth noting when a company has a relatively high accrual ratio. That's because some academic studies have suggested that high accruals ratios tend to lead to lower profit or less profit growth.

Over the twelve months to June 2021, Vantea SMART recorded an accrual ratio of 0.86. As a general rule, that bodes poorly for future profitability. And indeed, during the period the company didn't produce any free cash flow whatsoever. In the last twelve months it actually had negative free cash flow, with an outflow of €4.6m despite its profit of €1.19m, mentioned above. Unfortunately, we don't have data on Vantea SMART's free cash flow for the prior year; that's not necessarily a bad thing, though we do generally prefer to be able to see a bit of a company's history.

That might leave you wondering what analysts are forecasting in terms of future profitability. Luckily, you can click here to see an interactive graph depicting future profitability, based on their estimates.

Our Take On Vantea SMART's Profit Performance

As we have made quite clear, we're a bit worried that Vantea SMART didn't back up the last year's profit with free cashflow. As a result, we think it may well be the case that Vantea SMART's underlying earnings power is lower than its statutory profit. At the end of the day, it's essential to consider more than just the factors above, if you want to understand the company properly.
