Returns On Capital Signal Tricky Times Ahead For Vantea SMART (BIT:VNT)
If you're not sure where to start when looking for the next multi-bagger, there are a few key trends you should keep an eye out for. One common approach is to try and find a company with returns on capital employed (ROCE) that are increasing, in conjunction with a growing amount of capital employed. Basically this means that a company has profitable initiatives that it can continue to reinvest in, which is a trait of a compounding machine. However, after investigating Vantea SMART (BIT:VNT), we don't think it's current trends fit the mold of a multi-bagger.
What Is Return On Capital Employed (ROCE)?
For those that aren't sure what ROCE is, it measures the amount of pre-tax profits a company can generate from the capital employed in its business. Analysts use this formula to calculate it for Vantea SMART:
Return on Capital Employed = Earnings Before Interest and Tax (EBIT) ÷ (Total Assets - Current Liabilities)
0.13 = €3.4m ÷ (€43m - €16m) (Based on the trailing twelve months to June 2022).
Therefore, Vantea SMART has an ROCE of 13%. In absolute terms, that's a satisfactory return, but compared to the Software industry average of 7.8% it's much better.

- Dividend is low compared to the top 25% of dividend payers in the Software market.

- Debt is not well covered by operating cash flow.
So How Is Vantea SMART's ROCE Trending?
When we looked at the ROCE trend at Vantea SMART, we didn't gain much confidence. Around two years ago the returns on capital were 19%, but since then they've fallen to 13%. Although, given both revenue and the amount of assets employed in the business have increased, it could suggest the company is investing in growth, and the extra capital has led to a short-term reduction in ROCE. If these investments prove successful, this can bode very well for long term stock performance.
The Key Takeaway
In summary, despite lower returns in the short term, we're encouraged to see that Vantea SMART is reinvesting for growth and has higher sales as a result. These growth trends haven't led to growth returns though, since the stock has fallen 47% over the last year. As a result, we'd recommend researching this stock further to uncover what other fundamentals of the business can show us.
