The subdued stock price reaction suggests that Risanamento SpA's (BIT:RN) strong earnings didn't offer any surprises. Investors are probably missing some underlying factors which are encouraging for the future of the company.

How Do Unusual Items Influence Profit?
To properly understand Risanamento's profit results, we need to consider the €17m expense attributed to unusual items. While deductions due to unusual items are disappointing in the first instance, there is a silver lining. When we analysed the vast majority of listed companies worldwide, we found that significant unusual items are often not repeated. And, after all, that's exactly what the accounting terminology implies. Risanamento took a rather significant hit from unusual items in the year to December 2023. As a result, we can surmise that the unusual items made its statutory profit significantly weaker than it would otherwise be.

An Unusual Tax Situation
Having already discussed the impact of the unusual items, we should also note that Risanamento received a tax benefit of €7.1m. This is of course a bit out of the ordinary, given it is more common for companies to be paying tax than receiving tax benefits! Of course, prima facie it's great to receive a tax benefit. And since it previously lost money, it may well simply indicate the realisation of past tax losses. However, the devil in the detail is that these kind of benefits only impact in the year they are booked, and are often one-off in nature. Assuming the tax benefit is not repeated every year, we could see its profitability drop noticeably, all else being equal. So while we think it's great to receive a tax benefit, it does tend to imply an increased risk that the statutory profit overstates the sustainable earnings power of the business.
Our Take On Risanamento's Profit Performance
In its last report Risanamento received a tax benefit which might make its profit look better than it really is on a underlying level. But on the other hand, it also saw an unusual item depress its profit. Based on these factors, we think that Risanamento's profits are a reasonably conservative guide to its underlying profitability.
