Shareholders Are Thrilled That The EL.En (BIT:ELN) Share Price Increased 154%
When you buy shares in a company, it's worth keeping in mind the possibility that it could fail, and you could lose your money. But on a lighter note, a good company can see its share price rise well over 100%. One great example is EL.En. S.p.A. (BIT:ELN) which saw its share price drive 154% higher over five years. And in the last month, the share price has gained 3.2%.

In his essay The Superinvestors of Graham-and-Doddsville Warren Buffett described how share prices do not always rationally reflect the value of a business. One flawed but reasonable way to assess how sentiment around a company has changed is to compare the earnings per share (EPS) with the share price.
During five years of share price growth, EL.En achieved compound earnings per share (EPS) growth of 7.1% per year. This EPS growth is lower than the 21% average annual increase in the share price. So it's fair to assume the market has a higher opinion of the business than it did five years ago. That's not necessarily surprising considering the five-year track record of earnings growth.

What about the Total Shareholder Return (TSR)?
We'd be remiss not to mention the difference between EL.En's total shareholder return (TSR) and its share price return. The TSR is a return calculation that accounts for the value of cash dividends (assuming that any dividend received was reinvested) and the calculated value of any discounted capital raisings and spin-offs. Dividends have been really beneficial for EL.En shareholders, and that cash payout contributed to why its TSR of 174%, over the last 5 years, is better than the share price return.
A Different Perspective
We regret to report that EL.En shareholders are down 16% for the year. Unfortunately, that's worse than the broader market decline of 7.1%. However, it could simply be that the share price has been impacted by broader market jitters. It might be worth keeping an eye on the fundamentals, in case there's a good opportunity. On the bright side, long term shareholders have made money, with a gain of 22% per year over half a decade. It could be that the recent sell-off is an opportunity, so it may be worth checking the fundamental data for signs of a long term growth trend. While it is well worth considering the different impacts that market conditions can have on the share price, there are other factors that are even more important. Consider risks, for instance. Every company has them, and we've spotted 1 warning sign for EL.En you should know about.
