Here's Why d'Amico International Shipping (BIT:DIS) Is Weighed Down By Its Debt Load

It's only natural to consider a company's balance sheet when you examine how risky it is, since debt is often involved when a business collapses. We can see that d'Amico International Shipping S.A. How Healthy Is d'Amico International Shipping's Balance Sheet?
According to the last reported balance sheet, d'Amico International Shipping had liabilities of US$151.1m due within 12 months, and liabilities of US$436.2m due beyond 12 months. Offsetting these obligations, it had cash of US$45.4m as well as receivables valued at US$38.3m due within 12 months. So its liabilities outweigh the sum of its cash and (near-term) receivables by US$503.6m.
The deficiency here weighs heavily on the US$247.7m company itself, as if a child were struggling under the weight of an enormous back-pack full of books, his sports gear, and a trumpet. So we'd watch its balance sheet closely, without a doubt. At the end of the day, d'Amico International Shipping would probably need a major re-capitalization if its creditors were to demand repayment.
We use two main ratios to inform us about debt levels relative to earnings. The first is net debt divided by earnings before interest, tax, depreciation, and amortization (EBITDA), while the second is how many times its earnings before interest and tax (EBIT) covers its interest expense (or its interest cover, for short). The advantage of this approach is that we take into account both the absolute quantum of debt (with net debt to EBITDA) and the actual interest expenses associated with that debt (with its interest cover ratio).

To be frank both d'Amico International Shipping's EBIT growth rate and its track record of staying on top of its total liabilities make us rather uncomfortable with its debt levels. But on the bright side, its conversion of EBIT to free cash flow is a good sign, and makes us more optimistic. After considering the datapoints discussed, we think d'Amico International Shipping has too much debt. That sort of riskiness is ok for some, but it certainly doesn't float our boat.
