It's only natural to consider a company's balance sheet when you examine how risky it is, since debt is often involved when a business collapses. We can see that d'Amico International Shipping S.A. (BIT:DIS) does use debt in its business. But the more important question is: how much risk is that debt creating?
When Is Debt Dangerous?
Debt and other liabilities become risky for a business when it cannot easily fulfill those obligations, either with free cash flow or by raising capital at an attractive price. If things get really bad, the lenders can take control of the business. How Strong Is d'Amico International Shipping's Balance Sheet?
The latest balance sheet data shows that d'Amico International Shipping had liabilities of US$144.4m due within a year, and liabilities of US$449.6m falling due after that. On the other hand, it had cash of US$85.1m and US$74.1m worth of receivables due within a year. So its liabilities total US$434.8m more than the combination of its cash and short-term receivables.
This is a mountain of leverage relative to its market capitalization of US$536.5m. This suggests shareholders would be heavily diluted if the company needed to shore up its balance sheet in a hurry.

While these numbers do not alarm us, it's worth noting that the cost of the company's debt is having a real impact. Our View

On the other hand, its interest cover makes us a little less comfortable about its debt. When we consider all the elements mentioned above, it seems to us that d'Amico International Shipping is managing its debt quite well. But a word of caution: we think debt levels are high enough to justify ongoing monitoring. When analysing debt levels, the balance sheet is the obvious place to start.
