How Is ROE Calculated?

ROE can be calculated by using the formula:

Return on Equity = Net Profit (from continuing operations) ÷ Shareholders' Equity

So, based on the above formula, the ROE for Openjobmetis is:

6.0% = €6.2m ÷ €104m (Based on the trailing twelve months to September 2020).

The 'return' is the amount earned after tax over the last twelve months. That means that for every €1 worth of shareholders' equity, the company generated €0.06 in profit.

Why Is ROE Important For Earnings Growth?

So far, we've learned that ROE is a measure of a company's profitability. Based on how much of its profits the company chooses to reinvest or "retain", we are then able to evaluate a company's future ability to generate profits. Assuming everything else remains unchanged, the higher the ROE and profit retention, the higher the growth rate of a company compared to companies that don't necessarily bear these characteristics.

A Side By Side comparison of Openjobmetis' Earnings Growth And 6.0% ROE

When you first look at it, Openjobmetis' ROE doesn't look that attractive. However, the fact that the its ROE is quite higher to the industry average of 4.2% doesn't go unnoticed by us. This probably goes some way in explaining Openjobmetis' moderate 8.1% growth over the past five years amongst other factors. Bear in mind, the company does have a moderately low ROE. It is just that the industry ROE is lower. Therefore, the growth in earnings could also be the result of other factors. Such as- high earnings retention or the company belonging to a high growth industry.

Next, on comparing Openjobmetis' net income growth with the industry, we found that the company's reported growth is similar to the industry average growth rate of 8.1% in the same period.
