Returns On Capital Are Showing Encouraging Signs At CESC (NSE:CESC)
If you're looking for a multi-bagger, there's a few things to keep an eye out for. Firstly, we'd want to identify a growing return on capital employed (ROCE) and then alongside that, an ever-increasing base of capital employed. If you see this, it typically means it's a company with a great business model and plenty of profitable reinvestment opportunities. Speaking of which, we noticed some great changes in CESC's (NSE:CESC) returns on capital, so let's have a look.
What is Return On Capital Employed (ROCE)?
For those that aren't sure what ROCE is, it measures the amount of pre-tax profits a company can generate from the capital employed in its business. To calculate this metric for CESC, this is the formula:
Return on Capital Employed = Earnings Before Interest and Tax (EBIT) ÷ (Total Assets - Current Liabilities)
0.09 = ₹26b ÷ (₹372b - ₹89b) (Based on the trailing twelve months to September 2021).
Therefore, CESC has an ROCE of 9.0%. On its own that's a low return, but compared to the average of 7.3% generated by the Electric Utilities industry, it's much better.

In the above chart we have measured CESC's prior ROCE against its prior performance, but the future is arguably more important. If you'd like to see what analysts are forecasting going forward, you should check out our free report for CESC.
How Are Returns Trending?
CESC's ROCE growth is quite impressive. The figures show that over the last five years, ROCE has grown 20% whilst employing roughly the same amount of capital. So our take on this is that the business has increased efficiencies to generate these higher returns, all the while not needing to make any additional investments. On that front, things are looking good so it's worth exploring what management has said about growth plans going forward.
Our Take On CESC's ROCE
As discussed above, CESC appears to be getting more proficient at generating returns since capital employed has remained flat but earnings (before interest and tax) are up. Since the stock has returned a staggering 173% to shareholders over the last five years, it looks like investors are recognizing these changes. So given the stock has proven it has promising trends, it's worth researching the company further to see if these trends are likely to persist.
