When we think about how risky a company is, we always like to look at its use of debt, since debt overload can lead to ruin. As with many other companies Total Transport Systems Limited (NSE:TOTAL) makes use of debt. But should shareholders be worried about its use of debt?
When Is Debt A Problem?
Debt assists a business until the business has trouble paying it off, either with new capital or with free cash flow. If things get really bad, the lenders can take control of the business. However, a more usual (but still expensive) situation is where a company must dilute shareholders at a cheap share price simply to get debt under control. Having said that, the most common situation is where a company manages its debt reasonably well - and to its own advantage. The image below, which you can click on for greater detail, shows that Total Transport Systems had debt of ₹360.7m at the end of September 2025, a reduction from ₹397.7m over a year. However, it also had ₹284.8m in cash, and so its net debt is ₹75.9m.
How Healthy Is Total Transport Systems' Balance Sheet?
The latest balance sheet data shows that Total Transport Systems had liabilities of ₹822.7m due within a year, and liabilities of ₹116.4m falling due after that. Offsetting these obligations, it had cash of ₹284.8m as well as receivables valued at ₹983.3m due within 12 months. So it actually has ₹329.0m more liquid assets than total liabilities.
It's good to see that Total Transport Systems has plenty of liquidity on its balance sheet, suggesting conservative management of liabilities. Because it has plenty of assets, it is unlikely to have trouble with its lenders.

In order to size up a company's debt relative to its earnings, we calculate its net debt divided by its earnings before interest, tax, depreciation, and amortization (EBITDA) and its earnings before interest and tax (EBIT) divided by its interest expense (its interest cover). This way, we consider both the absolute quantum of the debt, as well as the interest rates paid on it.
While Total Transport Systems's low debt to EBITDA ratio of 0.39 suggests only modest use of debt, the fact that EBIT only covered the interest expense by 5.6 times last year does give us pause. But the interest payments are certainly sufficient to have us thinking about how affordable its debt is. Finally, a company can only pay off debt with cold hard cash, not accounting profits. So we always check how much of that EBIT is translated into free cash flow. During the last three years, Total Transport Systems burned a lot of cash. While that may be a result of expenditure for growth, it does make the debt far more risky.
Our View
Total Transport Systems's EBIT growth rate suggests it can handle its debt as easily as Cristiano Ronaldo could score a goal against an under 14's goalkeeper. But the stark truth is that we are concerned by its conversion of EBIT to free cash flow. Taking all this data into account, it seems to us that Total Transport Systems takes a pretty sensible approach to debt. While that brings some risk, it can also enhance returns for shareholders.
