Optiemus Infracom Limited (NSE:OPTIEMUS) Stocks Pounded By 27% But Not Lagging Market On Growth Or Pricing
Optiemus Infracom Limited (NSE:OPTIEMUS) shareholders won't be pleased to see that the share price has had a very rough month, dropping 27% and undoing the prior period's positive performance. Still, a bad month hasn't completely ruined the past year with the stock gaining 61%, which is great even in a bull market.
Even after such a large drop in price, given close to half the companies in India have price-to-earnings ratios (or "P/E's") below 26x, you may still consider Optiemus Infracom as a stock to avoid entirely with its 65.8x P/E ratio. Although, it's not wise to just take the P/E at face value as there may be an explanation why it's so lofty.
Recent times have been quite advantageous for Optiemus Infracom as its earnings have been rising very briskly. It seems that many are expecting the strong earnings performance to beat most other companies over the coming period, which has increased investors’ willingness to pay up for the stock. If not, then existing shareholders might be a little nervous about the viability of the share price.

Does Growth Match The High P/E?
The only time you'd be truly comfortable seeing a P/E as steep as Optiemus Infracom's is when the company's growth is on track to outshine the market decidedly.
If we review the last year of earnings growth, the company posted a terrific increase of 31%. Pleasingly, EPS has also lifted 1,421% in aggregate from three years ago, thanks to the last 12 months of growth. So we can start by confirming that the company has done a great job of growing earnings over that time.
This is in contrast to the rest of the market, which is expected to grow by 26% over the next year, materially lower than the company's recent medium-term annualised growth rates.
In light of this, it's understandable that Optiemus Infracom's P/E sits above the majority of other companies. It seems most investors are expecting this strong growth to continue and are willing to pay more for the stock.
The Final Word
A significant share price dive has done very little to deflate Optiemus Infracom's very lofty P/E. While the price-to-earnings ratio shouldn't be the defining factor in whether you buy a stock or not, it's quite a capable barometer of earnings expectations.
As we suspected, our examination of Optiemus Infracom revealed its three-year earnings trends are contributing to its high P/E, given they look better than current market expectations. At this stage investors feel the potential for a deterioration in earnings isn't great enough to justify a lower P/E ratio. Unless the recent medium-term conditions change, they will continue to provide strong support to the share price.
