With EPS Growth And More, Tata Consultancy Services (NSE:TCS) Is Interesting

For beginners, it can seem like a good idea (and an exciting prospect) to buy a company that tells a good story to investors, even if it completely lacks a track record of revenue and profit. Unfortunately, high risk investments often have little probability of ever paying off, and many investors pay a price to learn their lesson.

So if you're like me, you might be more interested in profitable, growing companies, like Tata Consultancy Services (NSE:TCS). While profit is not necessarily a social good, it's easy to admire a business that can consistently produce it. Conversely, a loss-making company is yet to prove itself with profit, and eventually the sweet milk of external capital may run sour.

How Fast Is Tata Consultancy Services Growing?

As one of my mentors once told me, share price follows earnings per share (EPS). That means EPS growth is considered a real positive by most successful long-term investors. Tata Consultancy Services managed to grow EPS by 9.1% per year, over three years. That's a pretty good rate, if the company can sustain it.

One way to double-check a company's growth is to look at how its revenue, and earnings before interest and tax (EBIT) margins are changing. While we note Tata Consultancy Services's EBIT margins were flat over the last year, revenue grew by a solid 9.0% to ₹1.7t. That's progress.

Are Tata Consultancy Services Insiders Aligned With All Shareholders?

Since Tata Consultancy Services has a market capitalization of ₹12t, we wouldn't expect insiders to hold a large percentage of shares. But we do take comfort from the fact that they are investors in the company. Indeed, they hold ₹1.9b worth of its stock. That shows significant buy-in, and may indicate conviction in the business strategy. Even though that's only about 0.02% of the company, it's enough money to indicate alignment between the leaders of the business and ordinary shareholders.

Is Tata Consultancy Services Worth Keeping An Eye On?

As I already mentioned, Tata Consultancy Services is a growing business, which is what I like to see. Just as polish makes silverware pop, the high level of insider ownership enhances my enthusiasm for this growth. That combination appeals to me, for one. So yes, I do think the stock is worth keeping an eye on. What about risks? Every company has them, and we've spotted 1 warning sign for Tata Consultancy Services you should know about.

Of course, you can do well (sometimes) buying stocks that are not growing earnings and do not have insiders buying shares. But as a growth investor I always like to check out companies that do have those features. You can access a free list of them here.
