Here's Why I Think Tata Consultancy Services (NSE:TCS) Is An Interesting Stock
Some have more dollars than sense, they say, so even companies that have no revenue, no profit, and a record of falling short, can easily find investors. But as Warren Buffett has mused, 'If you've been playing poker for half an hour and you still don't know who the patsy is, you're the patsy.' When they buy such story stocks, investors are all too often the patsy.
In contrast to all that, I prefer to spend time on companies like Tata Consultancy Services (NSE:TCS), which has not only revenues, but also profits. Now, I'm not saying that the stock is necessarily undervalued today; but I can't shake an appreciation for the profitability of the business itself. In comparison, loss making companies act like a sponge for capital - but unlike such a sponge they do not always produce something when squeezed.

How Fast Is Tata Consultancy Services Growing?
If you believe that markets are even vaguely efficient, then over the long term you'd expect a company's share price to follow its earnings per share (EPS). That makes EPS growth an attractive quality for any company. We can see that in the last three years Tata Consultancy Services grew its EPS by 8.0% per year. That growth rate is fairly good, assuming the company can keep it up.
One way to double-check a company's growth is to look at how its revenue, and earnings before interest and tax (EBIT) margins are changing. While we note Tata Consultancy Services's EBIT margins were flat over the last year, revenue grew by a solid 17% to ₹1.9t. That's progress.

Are Tata Consultancy Services Insiders Aligned With All Shareholders?
Since Tata Consultancy Services has a market capitalization of ₹13t, we wouldn't expect insiders to hold a large percentage of shares. But we do take comfort from the fact that they are investors in the company. Indeed, they hold ₹2.2b worth of its stock. That shows significant buy-in, and may indicate conviction in the business strategy. Despite being just 0.02% of the company, the value of that investment is enough to show insiders have plenty riding on the venture.
Does Tata Consultancy Services Deserve A Spot On Your Watchlist?
One positive for Tata Consultancy Services is that it is growing EPS. That's nice to see. If that's not enough on its own, there is also the rather notable levels of insider ownership. The combination sparks joy for me, so I'd consider keeping the company on a watchlist. Now, you could try to make up your mind on Tata Consultancy Services by focusing on just these factors, or you could also consider how its price-to-earnings ratio compares to other companies in its industry.
Of course, you can do well (sometimes) buying stocks that are not growing earnings and do not have insiders buying shares. But as a growth investor I always like to check out companies that do have those features. You can access a free list of them here.
