Investors Could Be Concerned With Route Mobile's (NSE:ROUTE) Returns On Capital
What are the early trends we should look for to identify a stock that could multiply in value over the long term? Firstly, we'll want to see a proven return on capital employed (ROCE) that is increasing, and secondly, an expanding base of capital employed. Ultimately, this demonstrates that it's a business that is reinvesting profits at increasing rates of return. So when we looked at Route Mobile (NSE:ROUTE), they do have a high ROCE, but we weren't exactly elated from how returns are trending.
Return On Capital Employed (ROCE): What Is It?
For those that aren't sure what ROCE is, it measures the amount of pre-tax profits a company can generate from the capital employed in its business. To calculate this metric for Route Mobile, this is the formula:
Return on Capital Employed = Earnings Before Interest and Tax (EBIT) ÷ (Total Assets - Current Liabilities)
0.20 = ₹4.3b ÷ (₹32b - ₹9.6b) (Based on the trailing twelve months to December 2023).
Thus, Route Mobile has an ROCE of 20%. In absolute terms that's a great return and it's even better than the Software industry average of 15%.

What Does the ROCE Trend For Route Mobile Tell Us?
When we looked at the ROCE trend at Route Mobile, we didn't gain much confidence. Historically returns on capital were even higher at 34%, but they have dropped over the last five years. However, given capital employed and revenue have both increased it appears that the business is currently pursuing growth, at the consequence of short term returns. If these investments prove successful, this can bode very well for long term stock performance.
On a related note, Route Mobile has decreased its current liabilities to 30% of total assets. That could partly explain why the ROCE has dropped. What's more, this can reduce some aspects of risk to the business because now the company's suppliers or short-term creditors are funding less of its operations. Since the business is basically funding more of its operations with it's own money, you could argue this has made the business less efficient at generating ROCE.
Our Take On Route Mobile's ROCE
In summary, despite lower returns in the short term, we're encouraged to see that Route Mobile is reinvesting for growth and has higher sales as a result. These trends are starting to be recognized by investors since the stock has delivered a 1.5% gain to shareholders who've held over the last three years. Therefore we'd recommend looking further into this stock to confirm if it has the makings of a good investment.
