Persistent Systems' (NSE:PERSISTENT) earnings growth rate lags the 99% CAGR delivered to shareholders

Investing can be hard but the potential fo an individual stock to pay off big time inspires us. Not every pick can be a winner, but when you pick the right stock, you can win big. Take, for example, the Persistent Systems Limited (NSE:PERSISTENT) share price, which skyrocketed 662% over three years. In the last week shares have slid back 7.1%. It really delights us to see such great share price performance for investors.

While the stock has fallen 7.1% this week, it's worth focusing on the longer term and seeing if the stocks historical returns have been driven by the underlying fundamentals.

In his essay The Superinvestors of Graham-and-Doddsville Warren Buffett described how share prices do not always rationally reflect the value of a business. One imperfect but simple way to consider how the market perception of a company has shifted is to compare the change in the earnings per share (EPS) with the share price movement.

During three years of share price growth, Persistent Systems achieved compound earnings per share growth of 40% per year. In comparison, the 97% per year gain in the share price outpaces the EPS growth. This suggests that, as the business progressed over the last few years, it gained the confidence of market participants. It's not unusual to see the market 're-rate' a stock, after a few years of growth.

It is of course excellent to see how Persistent Systems has grown profits over the years, but the future is more important for shareholders. You can see how its balance sheet has strengthened (or weakened) over time in this free interactive graphic.

What About Dividends?

It is important to consider the total shareholder return, as well as the share price return, for any given stock. The TSR is a return calculation that accounts for the value of cash dividends (assuming that any dividend received was reinvested) and the calculated value of any discounted capital raisings and spin-offs. It's fair to say that the TSR gives a more complete picture for stocks that pay a dividend. We note that for Persistent Systems the TSR over the last 3 years was 685%, which is better than the share price return mentioned above. This is largely a result of its dividend payments!

A Different Perspective

It's nice to see that Persistent Systems shareholders have received a total shareholder return of 5.8% over the last year. That's including the dividend. However, that falls short of the 43% TSR per annum it has made for shareholders, each year, over five years. The pessimistic view would be that be that the stock has its best days behind it, but on the other hand the price might simply be moderating while the business itself continues to execute. Is Persistent Systems cheap compared to other companies? These 3 valuation measures might help you decide.

What you have missed is that this event happened last year too. Last year the number was 21 seconds. This year it beat Bolt. That's 60% improvement in an year. Now extrapolate this in many axes of work that Robots can come and fill in. The physical productivity and AI boom is just starting.

I can't pick a company. But I can pick a person. With no doubt that's Musk. Optimus for blue collar productivity increase and xAI for white collar productivity increase. Did anyone dabble with GrokBot here?

At first glance, this was the strongest earnings season in years. But when you look at where the growth actually came from, the story splits into two very different pictures.
