Some have more dollars than sense, they say, so even companies that have no revenue, no profit, and a record of falling short, can easily find investors. But as Peter Lynch said in One Up On Wall Street, 'Long shots almost never pay off.'
If, on the other hand, you like companies that have revenue, and even earn profits, then you may well be interested in Mastek (NSE:MASTEK). While profit is not necessarily a social good, it's easy to admire a business that can consistently produce it. In comparison, loss making companies act like a sponge for capital - but unlike such a sponge they do not always produce something when squeezed.

How Quickly Is Mastek Increasing Earnings Per Share?
If a company can keep growing earnings per share (EPS) long enough, its share price will eventually follow. That means EPS growth is considered a real positive by most successful long-term investors. As a tree reaches steadily for the sky, Mastek's EPS has grown 32% each year, compound, over three years. As a general rule, we'd say that if a company can keep up that sort of growth, shareholders will be smiling.
I like to see top-line growth as an indication that growth is sustainable, and I look for a high earnings before interest and taxation (EBIT) margin to point to a competitive moat (though some companies with low margins also have moats). Mastek maintained stable EBIT margins over the last year, all while growing revenue 27% to ₹22b. That's progress.

Are Mastek Insiders Aligned With All Shareholders?
Like standing at the lookout, surveying the horizon at sunrise, insider buying, for some investors, sparks joy. This view is based on the possibility that stock purchases signal bullishness on behalf of the buyer. However, insiders are sometimes wrong, and we don't know the exact thinking behind their acquisitions.
We do note that, in the last year, insiders sold -₹357m worth of shares. But that's far less than the ₹917m insiders spend purchasing stock. I find this encouraging because it suggests they are optimistic about the Mastek's future. It is also worth noting that it was Umang Nahata who made the biggest single purchase, worth ₹256m, paying ₹3,194 per share.
And the insider buying isn't the only sign of alignment between shareholders and the board, since Mastek insiders own more than a third of the company. Indeed, with a collective holding of 53%, company insiders are in control and have plenty of capital behind the venture. This makes me think they will be incentivised to plan for the long term - something I like to see. And their holding is extremely valuable at the current share price, totalling ₹39b. Now that's what I call some serious skin in the game!
Is Mastek Worth Keeping An Eye On?
For growth investors like me, Mastek's raw rate of earnings growth is a beacon in the night. On top of that, insiders own a significant stake in the company and have been buying more shares. So it's fair to say I think this stock may well deserve a spot on your watchlist. Before you take the next step you should know about the 3 warning signs for Mastek that we have uncovered.
