Do Karda Constructions's (NSE:KARDA) Earnings Warrant Your Attention?

Like a puppy chasing its tail, some new investors often chase 'the next big thing', even if that means buying 'story stocks' without revenue, let alone profit. But the reality is that when a company loses money each year, for long enough, its investors will usually take their share of those losses.

In contrast to all that, I prefer to spend time on companies like Karda Constructions (NSE:KARDA), which has not only revenues, but also profits. Now, I'm not saying that the stock is necessarily undervalued today; but I can't shake an appreciation for the profitability of the business itself. While a well funded company may sustain losses for years, unless its owners have an endless appetite for subsidizing the customer, it will need to generate a profit eventually, or else breathe its last breath.

How Fast Is Karda Constructions Growing?

As one of my mentors once told me, share price follows earnings per share (EPS). That means EPS growth is considered a real positive by most successful long-term investors. Over the last three years, Karda Constructions has grown EPS by 14% per year. That's a good rate of growth, if it can be sustained.

I like to take a look at earnings before interest and (EBIT) tax margins, as well as revenue growth, to get another take on the quality of the company's growth. The good news is that Karda Constructions is growing revenues, and EBIT margins improved by 11.2 percentage points to 33%, over the last year. That's great to see, on both counts.

Karda Constructions isn't a huge company, given its market capitalization of ₹13b. That makes it extra important to check on its balance sheet strength.

Are Karda Constructions Insiders Aligned With All Shareholders?

It makes me feel more secure owning shares in a company if insiders also own shares, thusly more closely aligning our interests. So it is good to see that Karda Constructions insiders have a significant amount of capital invested in the stock. To be specific, they have ₹2.5b worth of shares. That's a lot of money, and no small incentive to work hard. Those holdings account for over 20% of the company; visible skin in the game.

It's good to see that insiders are invested in the company, but are remuneration levels reasonable? Well, based on the CEO pay, I'd say they are indeed. For companies with market capitalizations between ₹7.5b and ₹30b, like Karda Constructions, the median CEO pay is around ₹14m.

The Karda Constructions CEO received total compensation of only ₹900k in the year to . You could consider this pay as somewhat symbolic, which suggests the CEO does not need a lot of compensation to stay motivated. CEO remuneration levels are not the most important metric for investors, but when the pay is modest, that does support enhanced alignment between the CEO and the ordinary shareholders. It can also be a sign of a culture of integrity, in a broader sense.

Is Karda Constructions Worth Keeping An Eye On?

One positive for Karda Constructions is that it is growing EPS. That's nice to see. The fact that EPS is growing is a genuine positive for Karda Constructions, but the pretty picture gets better than that. Boasting both modest CEO pay and considerable insider ownership, I'd argue this one is worthy of the watchlist, at least. We don't want to rain on the parade too much, but we did also find 2 warning signs for Karda Constructions that you need to be mindful of.

Of course, you can do well (sometimes) buying stocks that are not growing earnings and do not have insiders buying shares. But as a growth investor I always like to check out companies that do have those features. You can access a free list of them here.
