Is V R Infraspace (NSE:VR) Using Too Much Debt?

David Iben put it well when he said, 'Volatility is not a risk we care about. What we care about is avoiding the permanent loss of capital.' So it seems the smart money knows that debt - which is usually involved in bankruptcies - is a very important factor, when you assess how risky a company is. We note that V R Infraspace Limited (NSE:VR) does have debt on its balance sheet. But the real question is whether this debt is making the company risky.

When Is Debt Dangerous?

Generally speaking, debt only becomes a real problem when a company can't easily pay it off, either by raising capital or with its own cash flow. Part and parcel of capitalism is the process of 'creative destruction' where failed businesses are mercilessly liquidated by their bankers. However, a more common (but still painful) scenario is that it has to raise new equity capital at a low price, thus permanently diluting shareholders. Having said that, the most common situation is where a company manages its debt reasonably well - and to its own advantage. When we think about a company's use of debt, we first look at cash and debt together.

What Is V R Infraspace's Net Debt?

You can click the graphic below for the historical numbers, but it shows that as of March 2025 V R Infraspace had ₹172.0m of debt, an increase on ₹54.9m, over one year. However, it does have ₹46.7m in cash offsetting this, leading to net debt of about ₹125.3m.

A Look At V R Infraspace's Liabilities

According to the last reported balance sheet, V R Infraspace had liabilities of ₹432.0m due within 12 months, and liabilities of ₹173.4m due beyond 12 months. Offsetting these obligations, it had cash of ₹46.7m as well as receivables valued at ₹215.1m due within 12 months. So its liabilities outweigh the sum of its cash and (near-term) receivables by ₹343.7m.

Given V R Infraspace has a market capitalization of ₹1.75b, it's hard to believe these liabilities pose much threat. Having said that, it's clear that we should continue to monitor its balance sheet, lest it change for the worse.

In order to size up a company's debt relative to its earnings, we calculate its net debt divided by its earnings before interest, tax, depreciation, and amortization (EBITDA) and its earnings before interest and tax (EBIT) divided by its interest expense (its interest cover). The advantage of this approach is that we take into account both the absolute quantum of debt (with net debt to EBITDA) and the actual interest expenses associated with that debt (with its interest cover ratio).

Even though V R Infraspace's debt is only 2.5, its interest cover is really very low at 2.4. This does have us wondering if the company pays high interest because it is considered risky. In any case, it's safe to say the company has meaningful debt. It is well worth noting that V R Infraspace's EBIT shot up like bamboo after rain, gaining 42% in the last twelve months. That'll make it easier to manage its debt. There's no doubt that we learn most about debt from the balance sheet. Finally, a company can only pay off debt with cold hard cash, not accounting profits. So we clearly need to look at whether that EBIT is leading to corresponding free cash flow. Over the last three years, V R Infraspace saw substantial negative free cash flow, in total. While investors are no doubt expecting a reversal of that situation in due course, it clearly does mean its use of debt is more risky.

Our View

V R Infraspace's conversion of EBIT to free cash flow and interest cover definitely weigh on it, in our esteem. But its EBIT growth rate tells a very different story, and suggests some resilience. We think that V R Infraspace's debt does make it a bit risky, after considering the aforementioned data points together. Not all risk is bad, as it can boost share price returns if it pays off, but this debt risk is worth keeping in mind. When analysing debt levels, the balance sheet is the obvious place to start. But ultimately, every company can contain risks that exist outside of the balance sheet. These risks can be hard to spot.
