The Market Doesn't Like What It Sees From Nesco Limited's (NSE:NESCO) Earnings Yet
Nesco Limited's (NSE:NESCO) price-to-earnings (or "P/E") ratio of 18.2x might make it look like a buy right now compared to the market in India, where around half of the companies have P/E ratios above 31x and even P/E's above 59x are quite common. Nonetheless, we'd need to dig a little deeper to determine if there is a rational basis for the reduced P/E.
Recent times haven't been advantageous for Nesco as its earnings have been rising slower than most other companies. The P/E is probably low because investors think this lacklustre earnings performance isn't going to get any better. If you still like the company, you'd be hoping earnings don't get any worse and that you could pick up some stock while it's out of favour.

In order to justify its P/E ratio, Nesco would need to produce sluggish growth that's trailing the market.
Retrospectively, the last year delivered an exceptional 18% gain to the company's bottom line. Pleasingly, EPS has also lifted 115% in aggregate from three years ago, thanks to the last 12 months of growth. Therefore, it's fair to say the earnings growth recently has been superb for the company.
Turning to the outlook, the next year should generate growth of 6.2% as estimated by the only analyst watching the company. Meanwhile, the rest of the market is forecast to expand by 26%, which is noticeably more attractive.
With this information, we can see why Nesco is trading at a P/E lower than the market. It seems most investors are expecting to see limited future growth and are only willing to pay a reduced amount for the stock.
The Final Word
Generally, our preference is to limit the use of the price-to-earnings ratio to establishing what the market thinks about the overall health of a company.
We've established that Nesco maintains its low P/E on the weakness of its forecast growth being lower than the wider market, as expected. Right now shareholders are accepting the low P/E as they concede future earnings probably won't provide any pleasant surprises. Unless these conditions improve, they will continue to form a barrier for the share price around these levels.
