Ind-Swift Limited (NSE:INDSWFTLTD) Stock Catapults 28% Though Its Price And Business Still Lag The Industry

Ind-Swift Limited (NSE:INDSWFTLTD) shareholders are no doubt pleased to see that the share price has bounced 28% in the last month, although it is still struggling to make up recently lost ground. Unfortunately, the gains of the last month did little to right the losses of the last year with the stock still down 23% over that time.

Even after such a large jump in price, Ind-Swift's price-to-sales (or "P/S") ratio of 0.1x might still make it look like a buy right now compared to the Pharmaceuticals industry in India, where around half of the companies have P/S ratios above 1.8x and even P/S above 4x are quite common. Nonetheless, we'd need to dig a little deeper to determine if there is a rational basis for the reduced P/S.

What Does Ind-Swift's Recent Performance Look Like?

Revenue has risen at a steady rate over the last year for Ind-Swift, which is generally not a bad outcome. Perhaps the market believes the recent revenue performance might fall short of industry figures in the near future, leading to a reduced P/S. If that doesn't eventuate, then existing shareholders may have reason to be optimistic about the future direction of the share price.

Although there are no analyst estimates available for Ind-Swift, take a look at this free data-rich visualisation to see how the company stacks up on earnings, revenue and cash flow.

Is There Any Revenue Growth Forecasted For Ind-Swift?

Ind-Swift's P/S ratio would be typical for a company that's only expected to deliver limited growth, and importantly, perform worse than the industry.

Retrospectively, the last year delivered a decent 6.4% gain to the company's revenues. The latest three year period has also seen a 26% overall rise in revenue, aided somewhat by its short-term performance. So we can start by confirming that the company has actually done a good job of growing revenue over that time.

Comparing the recent medium-term revenue trends against the industry's one-year growth forecast of 12% shows it's noticeably less attractive.

In light of this, it's understandable that Ind-Swift's P/S sits below the majority of other companies. Apparently many shareholders weren't comfortable holding on to something they believe will continue to trail the wider industry.

The Final Word

Despite Ind-Swift's share price climbing recently, its P/S still lags most other companies. It's argued the price-to-sales ratio is an inferior measure of value within certain industries, but it can be a powerful business sentiment indicator.

As we suspected, our examination of Ind-Swift revealed its three-year revenue trends are contributing to its low P/S, given they look worse than current industry expectations. Right now shareholders are accepting the low P/S as they concede future revenue probably won't provide any pleasant surprises. Unless the recent medium-term conditions improve, they will continue to form a barrier for the share price around these levels.
