The excitement of investing in a company that can reverse its fortunes is a big draw for some speculators, so even companies that have no revenue, no profit, and a record of falling short, can manage to find investors. But the reality is that when a company loses money each year, for long enough, its investors will usually take their share of those losses. Loss-making companies are always racing against time to reach financial sustainability, so investors in these companies may be taking on more risk than they should.

So if this idea of high risk and high reward doesn't suit, you might be more interested in profitable, growing companies, like Cipla (NSE:CIPLA). Now this is not to say that the company presents the best investment opportunity around, but profitability is a key component to success in business.

How Fast Is Cipla Growing?

Generally, companies experiencing growth in earnings per share (EPS) should see similar trends in share price. That means EPS growth is considered a real positive by most successful long-term investors. It certainly is nice to see that Cipla has managed to grow EPS by 18% per year over three years. If growth like this continues on into the future, then shareholders will have plenty to smile about.

Careful consideration of revenue growth and earnings before interest and taxation (EBIT) margins can help inform a view on the sustainability of the recent profit growth. The music to the ears of Cipla shareholders is that EBIT margins have grown from 16% to 21% in the last 12 months and revenues are on an upwards trend as well. Both of which are great metrics to check off for potential growth.

Are Cipla Insiders Aligned With All Shareholders?

Insider interest in a company always sparks a bit of intrigue and many investors are on the lookout for companies where insiders are putting their money where their mouth is. That's because insider buying often indicates that those closest to the company have confidence that the share price will perform well. However, insiders are sometimes wrong, and we don't know the exact thinking behind their acquisitions.

One positive for Cipla, is that company insiders spent ₹1.1m acquiring shares in the last year. This might not be a huge sum, but it's well worth noting anyway, given the complete lack of selling.

The good news, alongside the insider buying, for Cipla bulls is that insiders (collectively) have a meaningful investment in the stock. We note that their impressive stake in the company is worth ₹383b. That equates to 33% of the company, making insiders powerful and aligned with other shareholders. Very encouraging.

Is Cipla Worth Keeping An Eye On?

For growth investors, Cipla's raw rate of earnings growth is a beacon in the night. On top of that, insiders own a significant stake in the company and have been buying more shares. These things considered, this is one stock worth watching. While we've looked at the quality of the earnings, we haven't yet done any work to value the stock. So if you like to buy cheap, you may want to check if Cipla is trading on a high P/E or a low P/E, relative to its industry.

The good news is that Cipla is not the only growth stock with insider buying. Here's a list of growth-focused companies in IN with insider buying in the last three months!
