Here's Why I Think Alpa Laboratories (NSE:ALPA) Might Deserve Your Attention Today

Some have more dollars than sense, they say, so even companies that have no revenue, no profit, and a record of falling short, can easily find investors. But as Warren Buffett has mused, 'If you've been playing poker for half an hour and you still don't know who the patsy is, you're the patsy.' When they buy such story stocks, investors are all too often the patsy.

If, on the other hand, you like companies that have revenue, and even earn profits, then you may well be interested in Alpa Laboratories (NSE:ALPA). Even if the shares are fully valued today, most capitalists would recognize its profits as the demonstration of steady value generation. Loss-making companies are always racing against time to reach financial sustainability, but time is often a friend of the profitable company, especially if it is growing.

How Fast Is Alpa Laboratories Growing Its Earnings Per Share?

Over the last three years, Alpa Laboratories has grown earnings per share (EPS) like young bamboo after rain; fast, and from a low base. So I don't think the percent growth rate is particularly meaningful. As a result, I'll zoom in on growth over the last year, instead. Like the last firework on New Year's Eve accelerating into the sky, Alpa Laboratories's EPS shot from ₹1.85 to ₹4.99, over the last year. You don't see 170% year-on-year growth like that, very often. That could be a sign that the business has reached a true inflection point.

I like to see top-line growth as an indication that growth is sustainable, and I look for a high earnings before interest and taxation (EBIT) margin to point to a competitive moat (though some companies with low margins also have moats). Alpa Laboratories shareholders can take confidence from the fact that EBIT margins are up from 1.4% to 6.4%, and revenue is growing. Ticking those two boxes is a good sign of growth, in my book.

Alpa Laboratories isn't a huge company, given its market capitalization of ₹1.2b. That makes it extra important to check on its balance sheet strength.

Are Alpa Laboratories Insiders Aligned With All Shareholders?

Many consider high insider ownership to be a strong sign of alignment between the leaders of a company and the ordinary shareholders. So we're pleased to report that Alpa Laboratories insiders own a meaningful share of the business. In fact, they own 61% of the company, so they will share in the same delights and challenges experienced by the ordinary shareholders. This makes me think they will be incentivised to plan for the long term - something I like to see. Valued at only ₹1.2b Alpa Laboratories is really small for a listed company. That means insiders only have ₹737m worth of shares, despite the large proportional holding. That might not be a huge sum but it should be enough to keep insiders motivated!

Is Alpa Laboratories Worth Keeping An Eye On?

Alpa Laboratories's earnings per share growth have been levitating higher, like a mountain goat scaling the Alps. That EPS growth certainly has my attention, and the large insider ownership only serves to further stoke my interest. The hope is, of course, that the strong growth marks a fundamental improvement in the business economics. So to my mind Alpa Laboratories is worth putting on your watchlist; after all, shareholders do well when the market underestimates fast growing companies. Still, you should learn about the 1 warning sign we've spotted with Alpa Laboratories .

Of course, you can do well (sometimes) buying stocks that are not growing earnings and do not have insiders buying shares. But as a growth investor I always like to check out companies that do have those features. You can access a free list of them here.
