Returns On Capital At Surya Roshni (NSE:SURYAROSNI) Have Hit The Brakes
If you're looking for a multi-bagger, there's a few things to keep an eye out for. Firstly, we'll want to see a proven return on capital employed (ROCE) that is increasing, and secondly, an expanding base of capital employed. Ultimately, this demonstrates that it's a business that is reinvesting profits at increasing rates of return. So, when we ran our eye over Surya Roshni's (NSE:SURYAROSNI) trend of ROCE, we liked what we saw.
What Is Return On Capital Employed (ROCE)?
For those that aren't sure what ROCE is, it measures the amount of pre-tax profits a company can generate from the capital employed in its business. Analysts use this formula to calculate it for Surya Roshni:
Return on Capital Employed = Earnings Before Interest and Tax (EBIT) ÷ (Total Assets - Current Liabilities)
0.18 = ₹4.3b ÷ (₹30b - ₹5.9b) (Based on the trailing twelve months to September 2024).
Thus, Surya Roshni has an ROCE of 18%. On its own, that's a standard return, however it's much better than the 14% generated by the Metals and Mining industry.

How Are Returns Trending?
The trend of ROCE doesn't stand out much, but returns on a whole are decent. The company has employed 46% more capital in the last five years, and the returns on that capital have remained stable at 18%. Since 18% is a moderate ROCE though, it's good to see a business can continue to reinvest at these decent rates of return. Over long periods of time, returns like these might not be too exciting, but with consistency they can pay off in terms of share price returns.
On a side note, Surya Roshni has done well to reduce current liabilities to 20% of total assets over the last five years. Effectively suppliers now fund less of the business, which can lower some elements of risk.
What We Can Learn From Surya Roshni's ROCE
In the end, Surya Roshni has proven its ability to adequately reinvest capital at good rates of return. On top of that, the stock has rewarded shareholders with a remarkable 441% return to those who've held over the last five years. So even though the stock might be more "expensive" than it was before, we think the strong fundamentals warrant this stock for further research.
