Lacklustre Performance Is Driving Surya Roshni Limited's (NSE:SURYAROSNI) 26% Price Drop

Surya Roshni Limited (NSE:SURYAROSNI) shares have retraced a considerable 26% in the last month, reversing a fair amount of their solid recent performance. Still, a bad month hasn't completely ruined the past year with the stock gaining 68%, which is great even in a bull market.

Although its price has dipped substantially, given about half the companies in India have price-to-earnings ratios (or "P/E's") above 32x, you may still consider Surya Roshni as an attractive investment with its 16.3x P/E ratio. Nonetheless, we'd need to dig a little deeper to determine if there is a rational basis for the reduced P/E.

Surya Roshni certainly has been doing a good job lately as it's been growing earnings more than most other companies. One possibility is that the P/E is low because investors think this strong earnings performance might be less impressive moving forward. If you like the company, you'd be hoping this isn't the case so that you could potentially pick up some stock while it's out of favour.

Does Growth Match The Low P/E?

The only time you'd be truly comfortable seeing a P/E as low as Surya Roshni's is when the company's growth is on track to lag the market.

Retrospectively, the last year delivered an exceptional 44% gain to the company's bottom line. The latest three year period has also seen an excellent 196% overall rise in EPS, aided by its short-term performance. Accordingly, shareholders would have probably welcomed those medium-term rates of earnings growth.

Turning to the outlook, the next year should generate growth of 16% as estimated by the three analysts watching the company. Meanwhile, the rest of the market is forecast to expand by 25%, which is noticeably more attractive.

In light of this, it's understandable that Surya Roshni's P/E sits below the majority of other companies. Apparently many shareholders weren't comfortable holding on while the company is potentially eyeing a less prosperous future.

What We Can Learn From Surya Roshni's P/E?

The softening of Surya Roshni's shares means its P/E is now sitting at a pretty low level. Using the price-to-earnings ratio alone to determine if you should sell your stock isn't sensible, however it can be a practical guide to the company's future prospects.

As we suspected, our examination of Surya Roshni's analyst forecasts revealed that its inferior earnings outlook is contributing to its low P/E. Right now shareholders are accepting the low P/E as they concede future earnings probably won't provide any pleasant surprises. It's hard to see the share price rising strongly in the near future under these circumstances.
