Rama Phosphates (NSE:RAMAPHO) Is Increasing Its Dividend To ₹1.00
The board of Rama Phosphates Limited (NSE:RAMAPHO) has announced that it will be paying its dividend of ₹1.00 on the 17th of September, an increased payment from last year's comparable dividend. Even though the dividend went up, the yield is still quite low at only 0.4%.

Rama Phosphates' Earnings Easily Cover The Distributions
The dividend yield is a little bit low, but sustainability of the payments is also an important part of evaluating an income stock. Rama Phosphates is quite easily earning enough to cover the dividend, however it is being let down by weak cash flows. We think that cash flows should take priority over earnings, so this is definitely a worry for the dividend going forward.
Looking forward, earnings per share could rise by 50.0% over the next year if the trend from the last few years continues. If the dividend continues along recent trends, we estimate the payout ratio will be 3.1%, which is in the range that makes us comfortable with the sustainability of the dividend.
Dividend Volatility
Although the company has a long dividend history, it has been cut at least once in the last 10 years. Since 2013, the dividend has gone from ₹0.80 total annually to ₹1.00. This works out to be a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of approximately 2.3% a year over that time. Modest growth in the dividend is good to see, but we think this is offset by historical cuts to the payments. It is hard to live on a dividend income if the company's earnings are not consistent.
The Dividend Looks Likely To Grow
With a relatively unstable dividend, it's even more important to see if earnings per share is growing. Rama Phosphates has impressed us by growing EPS at 50% per year over the past five years. Rapid earnings growth and a low payout ratio suggest this company has been effectively reinvesting in its business. Should that continue, this company could have a bright future.
Our Thoughts On Rama Phosphates' Dividend
Overall, this is probably not a great income stock, even though the dividend is being raised at the moment. While Rama Phosphates is earning enough to cover the payments, the cash flows are lacking. We would probably look elsewhere for an income investment.
Investors generally tend to favour companies with a consistent, stable dividend policy as opposed to those operating an irregular one. However, there are other things to consider for investors when analysing stock performance. To that end, Rama Phosphates has 4 warning signs (and 1 which is a bit unpleasant) we think you should know about. Looking for more high-yielding dividend ideas?
