Zooming In On Hindustan Zinc's Earnings
Many investors haven't heard of the accrual ratio from cashflow, but it is actually a useful measure of how well a company's profit is backed up by free cash flow (FCF) during a given period. In plain english, this ratio subtracts FCF from net profit, and divides that number by the company's average operating assets over that period. You could think of the accrual ratio from cashflow as the 'non-FCF profit ratio'.
As a result, a negative accrual ratio is a positive for the company, and a positive accrual ratio is a negative. That is not intended to imply we should worry about a positive accrual ratio, but it's worth noting where the accrual ratio is rather high. To quote a 2014 paper by Lewellen and Resutek, "firms with higher accruals tend to be less profitable in the future".
For the year to March 2024, Hindustan Zinc had an accrual ratio of -0.12. That indicates that its free cash flow was a fair bit more than its statutory profit. To wit, it produced free cash flow of ₹95b during the period, dwarfing its reported profit of ₹77.6b. Hindustan Zinc did see its free cash flow drop year on year, which is less than ideal, like a Simpson's episode without Groundskeeper Willie.

Our Take On Hindustan Zinc's Profit Performance
As we discussed above, Hindustan Zinc has perfectly satisfactory free cash flow relative to profit. Based on this observation, we consider it likely that Hindustan Zinc's statutory profit actually understates its earnings potential! Unfortunately, though, its earnings per share actually fell back over the last year. Of course, we've only just scratched the surface when it comes to analysing its earnings; one could also consider margins, forecast growth, and return on investment, among other factors. So if you'd like to dive deeper into this stock, it's crucial to consider any risks it's facing. While conducting our analysis, we found that Hindustan Zinc has 1 warning sign and it would be unwise to ignore it.
