Here's Why I Think Godawari Power & Ispat (NSE:GPIL) Is An Interesting Stock

For beginners, it can seem like a good idea (and an exciting prospect) to buy a company that tells a good story to investors, even if it completely lacks a track record of revenue and profit. But the reality is that when a company loses money each year, for long enough, its investors will usually take their share of those losses.

In contrast to all that, I prefer to spend time on companies like Godawari Power & Ispat (NSE:GPIL), which has not only revenues, but also profits. While profit is not necessarily a social good, it's easy to admire a business that can consistently produce it. In comparison, loss making companies act like a sponge for capital - but unlike such a sponge they do not always produce something when squeezed.

Godawari Power & Ispat's Improving Profits

In business, though not in life, profits are a key measure of success; and share prices tend to reflect earnings per share (EPS). So like a ray of sunshine through a gap in the clouds, improving EPS is considered a good sign. You can imagine, then, that it almost knocked my socks off when I realized that Godawari Power & Ispat grew its EPS from ₹15.16 to ₹86.51, in one short year. When you see earnings grow that quickly, it often means good things ahead for the company. But the key is discerning whether something profound has changed, or if this is a just a one-off boost.

I like to take a look at earnings before interest and (EBIT) tax margins, as well as revenue growth, to get another take on the quality of the company's growth. Godawari Power & Ispat shareholders can take confidence from the fact that EBIT margins are up from 16% to 36%, and revenue is growing. Ticking those two boxes is a good sign of growth, in my book.

Are Godawari Power & Ispat Insiders Aligned With All Shareholders?

Personally, I like to see high insider ownership of a company, since it suggests that it will be managed in the interests of shareholders. So as you can imagine, the fact that Godawari Power & Ispat insiders own a significant number of shares certainly appeals to me. In fact, they own 52% of the company, so they will share in the same delights and challenges experienced by the ordinary shareholders. To me this is a good sign because it suggests they will be incentivised to build value for shareholders over the long term. And their holding is extremely valuable at the current share price, totalling ₹24b. That means they have plenty of their own capital riding on the performance of the business!

Is Godawari Power & Ispat Worth Keeping An Eye On?

Godawari Power & Ispat's earnings per share growth have been levitating higher, like a mountain goat scaling the Alps. That EPS growth certainly has my attention, and the large insider ownership only serves to further stoke my interest. The hope is, of course, that the strong growth marks a fundamental improvement in the business economics. So yes, on this short analysis I do think it's worth considering Godawari Power & Ispat for a spot on your watchlist. It is worth noting though that we have found 2 warning signs for Godawari Power & Ispat that you need to take into consideration.

Although Godawari Power & Ispat certainly looks good to me, I would like it more if insiders were buying up shares. If you like to see insider buying, too, then this free list of growing companies that insiders are buying, could be exactly what you're looking for.
