If you're looking for a multi-bagger, there's a few things to keep an eye out for. Firstly, we'd want to identify a growing return on capital employed (ROCE) and then alongside that, an ever-increasing base of capital employed. Put simply, these types of businesses are compounding machines, meaning they are continually reinvesting their earnings at ever-higher rates of return. So, when we ran our eye over Marico's (NSE:MARICO) trend of ROCE, we really liked what we saw.
What is Return On Capital Employed (ROCE)?
For those who don't know, ROCE is a measure of a company's yearly pre-tax profit (its return), relative to the capital employed in the business. The formula for this calculation on Marico is:
Return on Capital Employed = Earnings Before Interest and Tax (EBIT) ÷ (Total Assets - Current Liabilities)
0.42 = ₹15b ÷ (₹55b - ₹20b) (Based on the trailing twelve months to March 2021).
So, Marico has an ROCE of 42%. That's a fantastic return and not only that, it outpaces the average of 18% earned by companies in a similar industry.

How Are Returns Trending?
In terms of Marico's history of ROCE, it's quite impressive. Over the past five years, ROCE has remained relatively flat at around 42% and the business has deployed 69% more capital into its operations. Now considering ROCE is an attractive 42%, this combination is actually pretty appealing because it means the business can consistently put money to work and generate these high returns. If these trends can continue, it wouldn't surprise us if the company became a multi-bagger.
The Bottom Line
In short, we'd argue Marico has the makings of a multi-bagger since its been able to compound its capital at very profitable rates of return. And long term investors would be thrilled with the 107% return they've received over the last five years. So even though the stock might be more "expensive" than it was before, we think the strong fundamentals warrant this stock for further research.
