Triveni Engineering & Industries Limited's (NSE:TRIVENI) insiders who sold earlier this year may be offered solace in this recent price drop

Despite the fact that Triveni Engineering & Industries Limited's (NSE:TRIVENI) value has dropped 8.6% in the last week insiders who sold ₹258m worth of stock in the past 12 months have had less success. Insiders might have been better off holding onto their shares, given that the average selling price of ₹258 is still below the current share price.

Although we don't think shareholders should simply follow insider transactions, logic dictates you should pay some attention to whether insiders are buying or selling shares.

Triveni Engineering & Industries Insider Transactions Over The Last Year

The Chairman & MD, Dhruv Sawhney, made the biggest insider sale in the last 12 months. That single transaction was for ₹258m worth of shares at a price of ₹258 each. That means that even when the share price was below the current price of ₹315, an insider wanted to cash in some shares. When an insider sells below the current price, it suggests that they considered that lower price to be fair. That makes us wonder what they think of the (higher) recent valuation. While insider selling is not a positive sign, we can't be sure if it does mean insiders think the shares are fully valued, so it's only a weak sign. It is worth noting that this sale was only 1.8% of Dhruv Sawhney's holding. Dhruv Sawhney was the only individual insider to sell over the last year.

Insider Ownership

Another way to test the alignment between the leaders of a company and other shareholders is to look at how many shares they own. I reckon it's a good sign if insiders own a significant number of shares in the company. Triveni Engineering & Industries insiders own 40% of the company, currently worth about ₹30b based on the recent share price. I like to see this level of insider ownership, because it increases the chances that management are thinking about the best interests of shareholders.
